A pair of dogs have been euthanized after a 5-year-old boy was attacked and killed here last week, and no charges are expected to be filed following an investigation into the incident, officials said Thursday.
According to previous Daily Press reports, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department initially disclosed the presence of only one dog at the scene of the attack that ended in the death of Sterling Vermeer. That dog, a pit bull, was subsequently surrendered at the scene.
But another dog, described as a 4-year-old lab and pit bull mix, was also given up after both dogs were found “covered in human blood” by animal control officers, San Bernardino County spokesperson Felisa Cardona said Thursday in response to a Daily Press inquiry.
The dogs were euthanized, Cardona said.
″...since no one saw the attack, we concluded both animals were involved,” she said in an email. “The owners elected to surrender both dogs. Those dogs would not be available for adoption because our objective is to always protect the public.”
While both dogs were destroyed, Sheriff’s officials told the Daily Press detectives determined only one was involved in the actual attack.
“This investigation is done and no charges will be filed against the owner of the dog,” Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station spokesperson Staci Parks said.
On Feb. 10, deputies responded to a 911 call shortly before 3 p.m after a caller reported that “a family dog was attacking a 5-year-old family member and would not let go,” authorities said.
Deputies later discovered that the child was being supervised by an adult relative at the home. When the adult stepped out of a room, leaving Sterling alone with the male pit bull, the boy was attacked.
The boy died of traumatic injuries before emergency personnel arrived.
