Dallas police say a man injured a 9-year-old girl after shooting at least three times into a moving SUV in a “road rage incident” on a highway Sunday evening.

Officers say a woman was driving the SUV with another man as a passenger and her daughter in the back seat.

The suspected gunman opened fire after a near-collision between his older white sedan and the SUV around 9:30 p.m.

The woman told police that the man cut in front of her SUV, forcing her to swerve as both vehicles sped north on a highway in northwest Dallas. The man then cut in front again, slamming on his brakes and nearly causing a crash.

The woman said he then pulled up alongside the SUV and fired into the driver's side, according to police.

The girl was shot once in her left side, police said. She was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

Police are now looking for the suspected gunman, who was described as having a salt-and-pepper goatee and thinning hair.

Starr said she was on the interstate, near the Mañana Drive exit, when a driver in a car swerved in front of her. The mother said when she swerved and blew her horn the male suspect pulled in front of her and slammed on his brakes.

According to Dixon, after regaining control of her vehicle from the sudden stop, she managed to drive around the suspect. It was then the man in the car pulled alongside the SUV and fired at least 3 rounds.

Don't engage these fucks in any way whatsoever, especially at night when there are likely to be less witnesses. Also, it might just be helpful in identification for them to release the shooter's race. I'm presuming they were able to see that considering they could see thinning hair and salt & pepper goatee.

Diamond Dixon said Monday afternoon at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where her daughter is being treated, that she hoped police would catch the man she said shot at her car.

Dixon said her daughter, Rubye Rhodes, 9, was in stable condition and has undergone two surgeries.

Dixon said she, Rhodes and a friend were headed home to Oklahoma City Sunday night around 9:30 p.m. when they encountered an erratic driver on I-35.

She said the driver of a white car nearly hit other cars on the road and swerved in front of the far-left lane where she was traveling.

Dixon said she told police she honked at the driver as she passed him, but he got in front of her and slammed on his brakes.

A moment later Dixon said the man drove up next to her with his window down and opened fire.

“I was going to attempt to speed up to get his tag number to report it, but then no more than my thought went to get his tag number my child started screaming,” Dixon said. “’I got shot! I got hit! I’m shot momma!’ We were like, 'What?' ‘My stomach! My stomach! I got shot! I’m hurt!’”

Dixon said she heard three shots hitting her doors and tire.

Rhodes was sitting behind Dixon.

The bullet injured the fourth grader’s left kidney and intestines.

Rhodes is now breathing on her own, but is expected to be hospitalized for several more days.

In hindsight, Dixon acknowledged the situation was a terrible learning experience and said she wished she had just reported the driver to police instead of going around him.

The best description of the suspect Dixon can remember is that he was driving a white, newer model car with tinted windows like an Infinity coup.

The man is white, with short salt and pepper hair, a goatee, wearing dark clothing. Police urged anyone with information to contact Dallas police. The case number is 012729-2020.

The family set up a GoFundMe account to help with Rhodes' recovery.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in this case. Crime Stoppers' number is 214-373-TIPS.

The 9-year-old girl seriously wounded in an apparent road rage shooting Sunday is continuing to recover and has been taken out of the Intensive Care Unit.
