GASTONIA, N.C. — A woman is being sought by police, charged along with four men with first-degree murder in the death of her one-time husband, whose body was found last week along the side of a South Carolina road.
Carla Jean Black, 26, of Blacksburg, S.C., is the only one of the five suspects still on the loose.
The four who are in jail are: William Glenn Bell Jr., 33; Billy Wayne Brinson, 34; Tristan Thomas West; and Wade Nelson Nations, 54. All four men are from Gastonia, North Carolina, just north of the state line and about 25 miles from where the body of Kenneth A. Pilgrim was found.
All five of the suspects knew one another as well as the deceased, Gaston County Police Capt. Curtis Rosselle said. Black and Pilgrim were at one time married.
Gaston County Police believe Pilgrim, 44, who also used the name Kenneth Black, was killed sometime in early August in the View Heights Court area, just north of the South Carolina line west of Gastonia. Pilgrim was a resident of Grover, North Carolina, roughly 20 miles east of Gastonia.
Pilgrim died of blunt force trauma and his body was then dumped in South Carolina about 5 miles away, said Rosselle.
Police became aware of the killing when a South Carolina worker discovered the body Aug. 6 in a ditch while mowing grass. A South Carolina coroner would rule the case a homicide. The body had been there for a few days and family had to ID him through tattoos found on his body, police said.
Police are looking at all angles for a motive from money to drugs, revenge to past confrontations, Rosselle said.
“Nothing is ruled out,” Rosselle said.
