Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, was found in a forest near Sonurli village, roughly 280miles from Mumbai, on Saturday morning. She had been tied to a tree with an iron chain.

Kumar, whose right leg was swollen from the chain, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. She was severely dehydrated, unable to speak and likely had not eaten in several days, the Lokmat Times reported.
It is unclear how long Kumar was in the jungle, as the area experienced heavy rains recently, but according to India TV, she told investigators that her former husband had tied her to the tree. She also claimed to have gone 40 days without food.

Police have launched an attempted murder case against Kumar's ex-husband. He also faces act endangering life or personal safety of others and wrongful confinement charges.
A cattle herder found Kumar on Saturday morning after he heard loud noises coming from within the dense forest.

Police arrived at the scene and used a cutter to break the chain and freed her from the tree. She was rushed to a primary healthcare center in Sawantwadi, where she received initial treatment.

Kumar was later transferred to a more advanced facility for continued treatment.
Footage recorded from inside the hospital showed Kumar writing a note about her condition in which she claimed her former husband had left her in the forest after a domestic dispute. She also alleged to have not eaten in over a month.

'She is out of danger,' a police official told The Telegraph Online. 'Doctors treating her said she suffers from psychiatric problems. We have found medical prescriptions in her possession.'
Officials say Kumar is doing 'fine', but remains under observation and is 'suffering from psychiatric issues'. She is reportedly 'weak' and 'not in a position to give her statement' to police at this time.

I watch 90 Day Fiance and can never understand why any woman would want to move to India and marry an Indian man.

My God! She looks like the actual living dead in that first photo.
She looks like she could break from the wind being too strong in the second.

And I second the thing about being flabbergasted that women willingly moving to India. Especially for a man. Delusion and/or ignorance has to be at play.

An American woman who was found chained to a tree "screaming" in a forest in the western Indian state of Maharashtra had shackled herself, police and her doctor have told the BBC.

Lalita Kayi, 50, was rescued about 10 days ago from the dense forests of Sindhudurg district after her cries for help were heard by shepherds.

In a written statement to the police, she had alleged that her husband "chained her and left her in the forest to die without food or water".

Ms Kayi, who is receiving treatment in a psychiatric facility, has not spoken publicly. The US embassy has also refused to comment, citing her right to privacy.

Ms Kayi’s discovery had shocked India and police had constituted several teams to investigate how she came to be in the forest.

Saurabh Agarwal, superintendent of police for Sindhudurg, told BBC Marathi on Tuesday that Ms Kayi had now said that she was not married and that she was probably suffering from hallucinations when she gave her first statement.

Police said she told them she had been distressed because her visa had run out and she was running out of money, so she had bought locks and chains and tied herself to the tree.

Dr Sanghamitra Phule, superintendent of the psychiatric hospital where Ms Kayi is being treated, told BBC Marathi that "her condition is improving".

"She eats, walks and also exercises. She is under treatment and we are also giving her some nutrients that her body was lacking."

Dr Phule said her family had been traced in the US and that Ms Kayi was in touch with them on the phone.

Kamala found that offensive... Last year when she was still of Indian decent. Not now though, she now identifies as black woman with a Jewish husband and what appears to be a Caucasian daughter.
