PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) - A sobbing woman has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing of another woman at Panther Lake.

Amber J. Debord, 33, of Chochester is accused of brutally killing Michele L. Burton, 36, with whom she admittedly hoped to have a sexual relationship.

Debord was jailed for investigation of second-degree murder after Burton was found dead on Thursday. Prosecutors said evidence of premeditation led to the filing of the more serious charge on Monday.

Debord refused to talk to deputies but told a corrections sargent that she met Burton at the Bethel Saloon last Wednesday night. Burton was on a date with a man at the time.

Debord, who stated that she is a bisexual, said she hoped to have a lesbian relationship with Burton. She also said she had too much to drink that night.

Burton's date told detectives that Debord approached the couple and engaged them in small talk at the bar. Debord and Burton eventually went outside together to smoke a cigarette, then went together to the bathroom.

A bartender later told detectives that the women locked the door of the bathroom and stayed inside for 30 some minutes.

Burton's date said he and the two women decided to head back to Burton's home in the 4400 block of Panther Lake Road West, where they continued to drink.

At one point, Burton's date said he went into the bedroom and found the two women naked in bed and kissing, he said. The man said Debord turned violent and began pushing both himself and Burton, prompting him to leave the home.

Deputies said Burton's date is not a suspect in the case.

Several hours after the man left, a 911 call made by a "hysterical female" led detectives to the home. Detectives said Debord made the call just after 2 a.m. Thursday and said "I think someone is dead."

Upon arriving, deputies found Burton's partially-clothed body outside the home. Burton was covered in blood, and clumps of bloody hair were scattered around the front yard, according to the statement of probable cause.

I guess this woman needs some lessons in saying " I had a good time and like you, you should call me sometime."

Seriously, at what point did a sharp object seem like a good "getting to know you" idea? This woman sounds like one of those rags that gets drunk, does things she really wants to do sober but won't, then hides behind the "oh, I was so drunk, I don't remember a thing" line the next day.

And in this case, she either sobered up or got turned down.

A Colchester woman pleaded guilty to killing a 36-year-old Panther Lake woman a year to the day after prosecutors filed charges in the case.

Amber J. Debord, who was 33 when she stabbed 36-year-old Michele Lee Burton to death, will be sentenced for second-degree murder on March 24.

Prosecutors and Debord's attorney, Tom Weaver, will both recommend that Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Anna M. Laurie give Debord a 220-month sentence ? about 18 years and four months ? which is the top of the sentencing range for second-degree murder in the case.

Deputy prosecutor Andy Anderson called the sentencing recommendation "appropriate," adding that Debord's willingness to accept responsibility for the crime dropped the original charge of first-degree murder to a plea of second-degree murder.

Debord underwent mental health evaluations prior to a possible trial. Weaver, said he would have presented such findings to a jury, and asked the court to let the jury consider also the charge of manslaughter in deliberations.

But Debord wanted to plead guilty, Weaver said.

"Amber is extremely remorseful," he said. "She did not want to put the Burton family, nor her own family, through a trial."

Judge Laurie asked Debord why she made the plea Tuesday morning.

"I killed somebody," she answered.

The nearly 18-year sentence will keep Debord in prison until close to her 50th birthday, Weaver said.
