Homicide investigators obtained arrest warrants for 71-year-old Barbara Edwards and 35-year-old Jermaine Hardeman. Both are charged with felony murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and cruelty to children in the second degree after 3-year-old Armani Lyons died from a gunshot wound.
The shooting occurred just after 12:35 a.m. in Atlanta’s Police Zone 3 in the southwestern part of the city. Lyons died after being rushed to the hospital.
According to the Atlanta Assistant police Chief Carvan Tyrus, who spoke about the tragedy during Monday’s news conference, Armani was left inside an apartment with the 71-year-old babysitter while the child’s parent had gone to work.
“Somehow that 3-year-old ends up with a gunshot wound to the head,” Tyrus said.
