A mother is facing manslaughter charges after she allegedly let her boyfriend starve and burn her five-month-old baby daughter to death. Hope Goss also reportedly let Gage Thibeaux torture baby Tori while they were sharing a room in Motel 6 in Port Allen, Louisiana.
Tori died of a heart attack on Friday, June 5, and a medical examiner found that she was severely malnourished and burned by scalding water before her death. West Baton Rouge Parish officials said that the little girl suffered third-degree burns on one-third of her body and was weighing less than eight pounds at the time of her death.
However, the exact reason whether it was the burns or malnourishment that led to Tori's death or the combination of both is yet to be determined.
Police have arrested both the suspects, Goss and her 23-year-old partner Thibeaux, in the case. The 23-year-old mother faces manslaughter charges for failing to alert authorities about the abuse of her daughter, while Thibeaux has been booked on counts of second-degree murder and accused of inflicting the burns found on the infant. Police are investigating the death as a homicide.
First Assistant District Attorney Tony Clayton, who will prosecute Tori’s murder, said: “It’s one of the worst things you can ever imagine. To inflict this on a helpless child, it’s just something your mind can’t come to grips with.” He also said that the pictures taken as evidence were so graphic that he struggled to review them. "Some people ought to not be parents," Clayton added. A two-year-old girl who was also living with the suspects and the victim at the motel was found with bite marks and has reportedly now being cared for by social services.
Meanwhile, some friends of Goss have come forward to defend her on Facebook with one identified as Shandra Griffin writing, “If y’all gonna pass through and don’t have nothing positive to say on the page please keep moving and pray for family and let’s get JUSTICE for this beautiful angel!!! WE LOVE YOU HOPE!!! Get close with God baby girl!!” While another one named Mikah Zeringue said: ‘Y’all don’t have the full story. Only Hope and Gage know what really happened.”
