Somewhere in cheese country, Wisconsin

" A 36-year-old woman and three 16-year-old boys are suspected in the shooting or killing of more than 100 deer within a 200-square-mile (518-square-kilometer) area in eastern Wisconsin.

The poaching occurred between the spring of 2023 and last July across Fond du Lac, Dodge and Washington counties, the Fond du Lac County sheriffs’ office said in a release.

A spotlight was used after dark to find deer in fields. The deer then were shot.
The heads of some bucks with large antlers were severed. The suspects also drove around with the intent of striking deer on roadways, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Selfies” were taken with one deer that was struck and placed in the vehicle, Sheriff Ryan F. Waldschmidt said in the release.

“They drove around to various locations with the deer still alive and suffering in the trunk or back seat and continued to produce video clips documenting their travels with the wounded deer,” he said.

Investigators also believe geese, raccoons, possums, turtles and other animals were harassed."

I said in the title it's not the only headline similiar like this over the years:

And this thread:

I didn't realize this was specifically a crime in itself.

Firstly, I want to say I just hate crimes and cruelty against animals, even glancing at some of these story titles is upsetting. I can be tolerant of a lot of bullshit, but people enjoying the hurting of animals is not one of them

Your question was interesting and I was curious about what the law was about vehicles and game.
There's a patchwork of rules across states about what to do if you accidently strike an animal. But generally, it's OK to take the carcass home. Wasting meat is frowned upon.

The Fishing and Game department doesn't want people getting the idea that in lieu of a license, or hunting out of season, hitting or chasing down game is a sneaky alternative. Poaching
There's rules here and there forbidding chasing down game with a vehicle.
Plus it's a public safety issue.

I don't know if you hunt. @knockout is the only person I know here that does hunt, he would probably have some insight into all of this.

Here's another ugly tale:

Apparently not a problem until 100 deer are involved.

Here's another ugly tale:

None of my vehicles would handle a deer strike very well, so not something I'd ever do or find funny.

It is one thing to go out and hunt for your dinner table (and I am not talking about going to Ikea in search of a dining room set) but deliberately going out of your way to make animals suffer is a different level of psycho. Those deer could have went to feed several families, especially now that grocery bills are sky high, especially the price of meat.
