A child is dead after being shot late Sunday during a domestic dispute in Hillcrest. Jacksonville police were called to an apartment complex just before midnight for reports of a person shot.

Officers arrived to find a 2-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, police said during a news conference Monday morning.

Police said there was a domestic dispute in the home and during that dispute, someone produced a gun and fired shots striking the child. A person who was in the home during the shooting left the scene and police are looking for them.

The man accused of shooting and killing a two-year-old boy after JSO detectives said an argument among adults led to a gun being fired is in police custody after nearly a 24-hour search to find him.

JSO detectives said 21-year-old Steven Dodson Jr. was arrested late Monday night after running from the scene of the shooting late Sunday.

Dodson faces charges of murder, attempted murder, child endangerment, tampering with evidence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Dodson's less redacted arrest report reveals that he is the stepparent of A'mahri Robinson, the two-year-old who was killed.

According to the report, a witness told officers Dodson shot at them while they held A'mahri.

Following the shooting, the report says Dodson threw the gun in a dumpster outside while running away from the scene. Another individual not named reportedly retrieved the gun from the dumpster.

While detectives were investigating the incident on scene, JSO says a firearm was located that appeared to look similar to the gun Dodson was caught on surveillance video throwing away.

The family of a young boy who was shot and killed Sunday during a dispute at a Westside apartment complex said he was the “happiest baby” and his death has left them in shock and in “deep sadness.”

The family spoke to News4JAX on Monday and shared photos and videos of A’mahri Robinson.

The family was not ready to speak to News4JAX on camera, but an online fundraiser created by Robinson’s aunt said he was “lovable, and always bringing joy to everyone around him.”
“We appreciate your love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Thank you for standing with us,” the fundraiser states. “Thank you for keeping A’mahri and our family in your thoughts during this very sad moment. Your kindness and support mean more than words can say.”
