CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — A 14-year-old charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the death of a tobacco shop employee will have his case tried as an adult.

Bre'juan Williams-Hampton appeared in Kanawha County Circuit Court Tuesday morning for a transfer hearing, during which Judge Maryclaire Akers ruled the first-degree murder and robbery charges would be moved from juvenile to adult status.

Another 14-year-old, also charged with first-degree murder, has not been identified because his case is still sealed and in juvenile court. They are accused in the murder of Caden Martin, 19, who was shot and killed while working at the Tobacco & Pipe Shop in North Charleston on Jan. 30.

Williams-Hampton was taken into custody around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 31. A previous news release from Charleston police said Williams-Hampton went into the store around 9 p.m. on Jan. 30, pulled out a gun and demanded money and merchandise. Police said he then fired shots at Martin on his way out of the business. Police said they found Martin dead behind the counter when they arrived.

“It’s senseless,” Sandi Cendẽno, Martin's grandmother told Eyewitness News following the shooting. “It should have never happened. They got what they wanted. They should’ve just left. They didn’t have to shoot him.”
