The investigation began on Nov. 21, when deputies were called to a hospital about a 14-year-old teen seeking treatment after recently giving birth at a home.
Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to the home in Denham Springs. They said they discovered the teen had delivered the baby and had placed the infant in a “tote” to conceal it.
Authorities said that when first responders located the “tote,” they found the baby dead inside.
Officials believe the infant was carried to full term, born alive, and killed immediately after birth. Authorities believe the teen kept the pregnancy a secret from her family.
The teen was originally charged with failure to seek assistance and obstruction of justice in the death of her newborn.
However, she received the first-degree murder charge after an autopsy confirmed the manner of death was homicide.
