A news release from the department states, “At approximately 8:00 a.m. on March 18, 2026, members of the Bath Police Department and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded with Bath Ambulance and Steuben County EMS to the report of an unresponsive 12-day-old infant. Upon arrival, members of the Bath PD and the Sheriff’s Office administered CPR before the infant was taken by Bath Ambulance and Steuben County EMS to Ira Devenport, where the infant was pronounced dead. During the investigation, it was determined that the death was a result of negligence involving unsafe sleep arrangements for the infant.”
