An Acton mother accused in the death of her 13-month-old son has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, after pleading not guilty to murder at the time of the child’s death nearly three years ago.

Appearing in handcuffs and shackles at a hearing in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn on Feb. 28, Christina Hancock, 26, entered the plea, which followed an agreement hammered out between her attorney, Stanley Norkunas, and prosecutors.

Calling the child’s death “an avoidable tragedy,” but factoring statements both from the defense and prosecution, Judge Maureen Hogan sentenced Hancock to 8 to10 years at the MCI Framingham correctional facility for women.

Hogan said the sentence is “not a reflection on the value of the child’s life, but weighing of all the factors in this case,” including Hancock’s lack of a prior criminal record, a history of mental illness and a turbulent upbringing. Hogan allowed 932 days of credit for the time Hancock has already served since being arrested following the death of her son, Kaydn.

With credit for time served, Hancock faces about five to seven years of further incarceration.
Hogan said sentencing guidelines in such a case in which the defendant has no prior criminal record call for 40 to 60 months.
