The parents of young children have been indicted on abuse charges after authorities say they tied at least one of their kids to a bed or a door using duct tape or zipties.

The indictments against Markeith Dynard Jefferson, 35, and Briana Janice Butler, 30, were issued Dec. 11, 2020, according to court records made public Monday. Jefferson is charged with one count of aggravated child abuse and Butler is charged with two counts.

The case was investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the victim or victims are between the ages of 7 to 12.

Charging documents against both Jefferson and Butler state the victim or victims were beaten with a belt and/or extension cord and tied to the bed or door with duct tape and zipties. Additionally, Jefferson is accused of submerging a child under water. Authorities contend the abuse happened on multiple occasions. No additional details have been released.

Court records show Jefferson has previous convictions for first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and second-degree theft. His attorney declined to comment, and records don’t yet list an attorney for Butler.
