Authorities say the blood of a Tennessee man charged in the death of his 5-year-old son has been found on a shovel.

District Attorney General Ray Crouch tells news outlets that hair also found on a shovel has been sent to a state lab for testing. Joseph Ray Daniels is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Joe Clyde Daniels.

Daniels reported his autistic and nonverbal son missing in April 2018. He was soon charged and blamed Joe’s death on his wife, Krystal Nicole Daniels. She’s charged with offenses including aggravated child neglect or endangerment.

Investigators say Joseph Daniels admitted to fatally beating Joe for urinating on the floor. He later recanted. Joe’s body has yet to be found.

What a clusterfuck. Ffs dude pick a story! He confesses, then throws wife/mom under the bus, what next, they never had a kid?

Blood on a shovel is not terribly compelling. I mean, we all know they did it, but my blood is likely to be on at least a couple of my several shovels. I want them solidly nailed with good evidence. I wonder if he never took the body anywhere, and the poor child is under the house.

There is a surprising development in the high-profile Joe Clyde Daniels criminal case. The little boy's mother, Krystal Daniels, is taking back key details she shared with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations. Details that implicated her husband, Joseph Daniels. That could have big implications in the trial given that there's very little physical evidence.
Their son Joe Clyde disappeared from the family's Dickson County home nearly two years ago. He is assumed to be dead but no remains have ever been found. His father is charged with homicide and his mother is charged with aggravated child neglect.

The TBI says Krystal told them she found her husband standing with fists clenched over a motionless Joe Clyde. "She said Joseph Daniels did take a swing at her. He didn't hit her and told her that if she told anybody that he would kill her," testified TBI agent Joe Boyd in court hearing in 2018.

That incriminating statement is key to the prosecution.

But now Krystal says she's taking that story back .

"Yes, I am very frustrated. And just, you know. And I do understand that if I wouldn't have ... if I wouldn't have felt pressured, um, at the time of the interview that was done with TBI I was not on my mental health meds and, um, I do feel like I was pressured," she told Newschannel 5's Nick Beres. "There's, you know, there's such a thing as false confession and, I mean... I, you know, I regret every bit of what I said."

Legal analyst Nick Leonardo said that complicates the case.

"It's a real mess when you start changing your story like that."

Leonardo said after initially cooperating with the TBI, Krystal seems to now be siding with her husband. And, that could be a problem come trial because it's not the first time that this has happened. Joseph Daniels initially confessed to killing Joe Clyde, but his since recanted.

Saturday marks the third day of a search on the property of 5-year-old Baby Joe Clyde Daniels, who went missing two years ago.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents have spent two days cutting down trees and digging through the dirt behind the house where Baby Joe lived, his grandparents and aunt still live there.

Saturday, the search was paused in order to let the dirt dry after a heavy rain, according to the Dickson County sheriff.

News 2 spoke with Baby Joe’s grandfather, Joe Daniels, on the phone.

Daniels is out on the road driving trucks for work. He said he can’t come home because the TBI says he won’t be able to leave the house if he does.

His wife, Bell Daniels is currently in the house with their daughter.

Daniels adds that he is fine with the TBI on his property, adding he understands they need to do their job.

Daniels and his wife were out on the road for work the day Baby Joe disappeared and are not suspects.

A letter written by the mother of Joe Clyde Daniels states she has more information on the whereabouts of her son's body, WTVF reported.

Joe Clyde Daniels, a 5-year-old autistic boy, disappeared nearly two years ago. He is assumed to be dead but no remains have ever been found. His father is charged with homicide and his mother is charged with aggravated child neglect.

The child's mother, Krystal Daniels, made the statement in a letter she sent from jail to the child's grandparents. Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation continue to search the grandparent's property.

Daniel's told WTVF she did not give a tip to the TBI to prompt the current search.

After more than a week of searching on the grandparents' property, TBI agents said the search is wrapping up.

The search of a home where a non-verbal, autistic 5-year-old is believed to have been killed has resulted in the discovery of bone and bone fragments.

Joe Clyde Daniels, otherwise known as 'Baby Joe' disappeared in April 2018, his parents Joseph and Krystal Daniels initially telling police their son had disappeared. After weeks of searching, father Joseph was arrested for the boy's murder after telling police he beat the boy to death.

According to the affidavit of a search warrant which led to the search of the family's home in May, Joseph Daniels told police he hit the boy with a closed fist in the body, head, and face while the boy was on the floor and while he was on a table inside the home. At the time, he also told police he issued the beating because the boy had soiled the floor.

Daniels also told police he transported the body in the trunk of his vehicle and has given police several locations where the body was buried. However, none of these locations have led to any evidence. According to an inventory receipt from the May 22nd search, investigators found 26 total bones and bone fragments, collected 2 bags of dirt, and a rootball and plastic.

The search warrant was a result of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's (TBI) analysis of Google location data on and around the property on April 3, 2018, the date Joe Clyde was reportedly killed. The affidavit also reveals agents believe Joseph Daniels never left the home in his car on that date and in the early morning hours of the next day since video from an intersecting Pruitt Springs Road home never shows a vehicle leave the driveway.

However, Google data connected to the cell phone of Joseph Daniels showed various points of location in and around the home, which gave the TBI an idea of plot points to search.

Investigators executed the search warrant in late May just over two years since the boy went missing. Joseph Daniels has been charged with the boy's murder and mother Krystal is also jailed on charges she knew of the boy's murder and helped to cover it up.

The parents of Dickson boy, Joe Clyde Daniels, say they will not be getting a divorce, which could complicate things for prosecutors in the case.

Sources tell NewsChannel 5 the couple won't be divorcing which means they likely won't testify against each other because spousal privilege remains on the table - a large complication for prosecutors already heading to what will be a very high profile trial with very little physical evidence.

Now, just months before a trial there seems little chance one partner can be forced to testify against the other. They are to be tried together, but Krystal requested a divorce to separate herself before trial.

"That's one distancing from the other because the other is the bad actor," said Newschannel5 legal analyst Nick Leonardo.

Initially, Krystal had told a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent she saw her husband beating the child the night he disappeared. But later in an exclusive interview with Newschannel5 in 2019, she contradicted herself.

"Do you believe was capable of killing Joe Clyde," NewsChannel 5 asked. "I mean I don't think that he would ... I mean he's never really been like that ... you know, the abusive type," she said.

At trial, prosecutors could call and press Krystal to clarify. But now we've learned the divorce is not happening. Krystal and Joseph will remain married and there appears to be a united front. What does the defense or prosecution have to say about this? Nothing. And gag order remains in place.

We know authorities continue to look for Joe Clyde's remains. At one point last year digging up property around the home where the boy lived. But nothing of substance was found, and Krystal has made the case her son may still be alive.

I don't want people to be looking for my son's remains. I want them looking for him," said Krystal in the 2019 interview.

Investigators have made it clear they believe Joe Clyde to be dead, but without a body how do they prove it? If they were counting on Krystal to testify against her husband that now appears unlikely.

They don’t look right, either one of them. So the Female says she hopes the child is alive and she hopes they will look for him? Seems that she would know what happened to him? The male wants to move to another facility, to get better medical benefits? What did he do for his son? Or to him? Certainly he didn’t get better treatment?

New developments Thursday in the case of Baby Joe Clyde Daniels. The month of April marks three years since the 5-year-old went missing from his home in Dickson.

The boy’s father Joseph Daniels confessed to killing the little boy but has since recanted.

While both parents remain behind bars, a motion hearing continued Thursday in Dickson County on the case.

Joseph “Joe” Daniels appeared in the courtroom, while Krystal Daniels appeared via zoom. The biggest takeaways from Thursday are that the parents will now have separate trials and that the judge lifted the gag order allowing for trial participants to make public statements.

Joe Daniels’ public defender Jake Lockert told News 2 that it was important to him as most people have only heard that Daniels confessed:

“It’s nice to be able to share the other side of the story. We now know from surveillance video that he didn’t leave at that time with the child. There is no evidence, blood evidence of the victim in the house, on the coffee table, in the living room, in the trunk of the car, in the car itself. He confessed he carried the child over his shoulder out into a field, but there is no confirmed blood evidence of Joe Clyde Daniels on his clothing or shoes and there is no physical evidence as the TBI admitted today that corroborates his confession and they also admitted today that there is no physical evidence that the child is actually deceased.

Lockert went on to say that there is a “real possibility” that this could be an abduction. However, we have seen and heard recordings, and even a written statement from Joe Daniels saying otherwise.

Lockert is trying to prove that his client was coerced to confess to killing Baby Joe.

In a case with very little physical evidence, a witness’ statement can be all the jury needs to convict.

In the case against Krystal Daniels, what she claims she saw could help put her husband behind bars for life or face the death penalty.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Special Agent Joey Boyd has been the lead case agent on the investigation into missing – but presumed dead – Joe Clyde Daniels, also known as Baby Joe.

Krystal Daniels faces aggravated child neglect charges in the case of her missing son.

In the early morning hours of April 4, 2018, Boyd testified that Joseph and Krystal claimed their son Alex woke them with news about his 5-year-old brother.

“Joe Clyde had urinated on the floor. Joseph said that he’d handle it,” said Boyd.

In her statement to investigators, Krystal said a loud scream followed.

“She described it as a painful scream, and then she described that it suddenly just stopped. And, it was silence,” recalled Boyd.

Krystal came out of her room to find Joe Clyde on the ground.

“Motionless. Not moving. And Joseph standing over him with his fists clinched,” said Special Agent Boyd.

Krystal said her husband, who apparently has a black belt in martial arts, took a swing at her and said if she told anybody, he’d kill her.

“She stated that she never got close enough to check on him.” Boyd testified, “She went back to her room. She heard the car door shut. She came out of the room saw that Joseph and Joe Clyde were gone. She said she went back to her room and went to sleep.”

In the following days, Krystal and Joseph continued to claim Baby Joe had run off.

“She gave you a reason for the alleged lie. She was afraid of Mr. Daniels and her father-in-law. Is that true?” said Krystal’s lawyer. “That’s true,” Boyd responded.

Yet, six months after her arrest, she sent a letter to her father-in-law who read the note to News 2.

“You are my Mom and Papa Joe is like my dad. It’s right there!”

The letter raised more questions than answers in a case that is far from closed.

Krystal’s lawyer attempted to have her charges dropped. The Judge responded, “Respectfully, Mr. Porter, I’d say that your client was on notice that her husband Mr. Daniels posed a threat to the child when she came out of bed to investigate the child’s painful scream, saw him standing over her child motionless on the floor. She told agents that he left the house. She could have called 911 at that point. But instead, she went back to bed and went to sleep.”

Joe Clyde Daniels’ mother, Krystal – who’s set to stand trial after her husband, Joseph – has been watching our gavel-to-gavel coverage of the case. In an exclusive interview with NewsChannel 5, she commented on some key points we've heard so far in court.

Krystal Daniels called us Monday from the jail where she's being held in Dickson County. There, she's been watching the trial and decided to reach out to help explain some of what we've heard in the evidence against her husband.

There’s no video or audio allowed, but we transcribed verbatim what she told us and it's interesting.

Krystal told us she does not believe Joseph killed Joe Clyde and said there are many misconceptions. And she wouldn’t say her son is dead and holds out hope somewhere he is still alive.

Another question many have asked is will she testify against her husband? Krystal said she will not testify.

Prosecutors, at times, have also indicated that the parents might have drugged Joe Clyde.

Krystal said, “They say that my son was acting like he was drugged or something. That was not the case. It was his medication that was making him that way because Vanderbilt had increased it. We did not drug Joe Clyde.”

The district attorney also showed photos of a bedroom with a padlock, leaving some to wonder if the parents locked the little boy in the room.

“No, my in-laws put that on there to keep people out of the room when they weren't home,” she said.

And then there was the question of a padlock high up on the doors that leads outside. Did she think it was possible for Joe Clyde to open it himself? One theory is the boy moved a coffee table to reach the lock.

“There were wheels on the coffee table… you could take a pinky and scoot it,” she said.

Krystal also said, “We've witnessed him climb up in the chair and try to put the key in the lock to unlock it, but we caught him as he was trying to do it.”

A jury has found Joseph Daniels guilty in the murder of his son, baby Joe Clyde.

The jury found Daniels not guilty of first-degree murder, but guilty of first-degree murder in perpetration of a felony, aggravated child abuse, tampering with evidence and initiating a false report.

The Dickson County father was accused of murdering his 5-year-old son Joe Clyde Daniels in April 2018. Though investigators say the community searched for little Joe Clyde to a degree they had never seen before, the child’s body has not been recovered.

Jury deliberations started around 2 p.m. Friday and resumed at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Daniels was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree murder in perpetration of a felony, aggravated child abuse, initiating a false report and tampering with evidence in connection to the disappearance of little Joe Clyde. After seven days of testimony and state arguments in the trial, the state rested its case and the defense decided not to call any witnesses.

"If you had the hindsight of what the verdict was going to be, then I would’ve presented more proof," defense attorney Jake Lockert said.

During a news conference, the defense said they would appeal, citing "errors."

@Brillig

I was worried that he would get off. I hope they find that worthless egg guilty too.

Legal jeopardy has intensified for the woman who allegedly failed to protect her 5-year-old son from his own father. That 5-year-old son is now presumed to be dead, and his father has been convicted of murder.

Krystal Daniels, 29, is now charged with aggravated child abuse/neglect/endangerment, conspiracy to commit aggravated child abuse, making false reports to an officer, and tampering with evidence, according to WTVF reporter Nick Beres. Daniels was previously charged with aggravated child neglect. If convicted, she faces a possible life sentence.\

Daniels’ son Joe Clyde Daniels, who was on the autism spectrum and also non-verbal, died at the hands of his father Joseph Ray Daniels, 31. A jury convicted the father in June of second-degree murder and other charges. The child’s elder brother Alex, who was eight years old during the 2018 murder, testified that “Baby Joe” got up from bed and urinated on the floor. Joseph Ray Daniels then beat Baby Joe. Alex testified to seeing his father take his brother outside.

Her trial is set to begin February 2022.

The father of Baby Joe Clyde Daniels, Joseph Daniels has been sentenced to 51 years, served concurrently, in the death of his child.

Daniels appeared in a Dickson County courtroom Tuesday for the sentencing hearing three months after he was found guilty on charges of felony murder, second-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, filing a false report, and evidence tampering in connection with the killing of “Baby” Joe Clyde.

The worthless egg's trial is delayed

Two reasons:
— FIRST, a key witness Daniel McCormick was found dead a few weeks ago.
McCormick testified at Joseph Daniels trial and was called to testify at Krystal’s trial.
You may recall, McCormick was the motorist who drove by the night the boy disappeared and reported seeing someone outside the Daniels home.
Details on the nature of his death have not been officially released, but I do know the TBI was called in to investigate.
Krystal’s attorneys want to wait to see the findings of that investigation … and it won’t be completed until March.
— AND SECOND, District Attorney Ray Crouch has Covid.
At a hearing today he told the judge he is symptomatic, sick and in quarantine.
There’s no way he’d be ready to go by next Tuesday.
SO, Krystal’s trial is now postponed until March 16th.
THE WHEELS OF JUSTICE TURN SLOW.

Nick Beres NC5

The egg implicated in her son’s beating death has pleaded no contest to charges on the first day of jury selection in her trial. Krystal Daniels, who faced life in prison, had agreed to spent 15 years behind bars.

Joseph Ray Daniels, the victim’s father, was previously sentenced to life on a charge of second-degree murder after jurors convicted him of beating son Joseph Baby Joe Clyde Daniels, 5, to death.
Krystal Daniels pleaded no contest to aggravated child abuse (15 years in prison), conspiracy to commit aggravated child abuse (12 years), false report (4 years), and tampering with evidence (6 years). Under the terms of her agreement, she will serve the sentences concurrently.

Prosecutors previously argued that Krystal Daniels was a risk to destroy evidence if she bonded out of jail. She admitted to witnessing the fatal beating, but her defense maintained she said this during a “six-hour interrogation,” according to The Tennessean.

Prosecutors said Joseph Ray murdered their son out of spite: Krystal Daniels was going to dump him for another man, prosecutor Josh Turnbow said. She was getting $1,200 for the boys and needed the money to leave Joseph Ray.

Joe Clyde Daniels, who was called “Baby Joe” to differentiate him from his grandfather of the same name, was reported missing on April 4, 2018, and the father tried to make it seem the young boy left home in the middle of the night.
In footage, Joseph Ray Daniels admitted spanking the boy, and gave different stories about whether he got mad at the 5-year-old, who is on the autism spectrum and non-verbal, for peeing in bed. But he said he did not remember things when he got angry.

Joseph Ray Daniels eventually admitted to hitting Baby Joe, putting his unresponsive body in a field and crossing his arms. The defense argued that investigators coerced this confession.
Baby Joe remains missing to this day. His half-brother Alex, whose mother is also Krystal Daniels, testified to seeing Joseph Ray stand over the boy’s body, and said that their father carried the victim out of the home.
