A Cullman man faces charges after his girlfriend's son died on his first birthday, according to The Cullman Times.
Jeffery Brown, 37, is charged with aggravated child abuse after the child, Hoss Wayne Benham, died Tuesday, the Cullman County Sheriff's Office told the Times.
Brown and the child's mother, Crystal Ballenger, 23, took the child to Cullman Regional Medical Center and said the boy accidentally drowned in a bathtub at their home at Monk's Trailer Park on U.S. Highway 31.
Authorities said hospital staff found external injuries on the child, whose body has been taken to the state Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy, according to the Times.
Brown was charged Thursday evening and is being held on a $30,000 bond at the Cullman County Detention Center.
