An Arizona father charged in the death of his young daughter, who was left in a hot car, could get a plea deal.
37-year-old Christopher Scholtes said he left the car running with the air conditioning on and got distracted while playing video games.

Scholtes' wife later arrived home and found their daughter unconscious. The girl later died at the hospital.

Investigators say surveillance video obtained from nearby homes showed that the girl had been left inside the vehicle for three hours. The temperature in Marana on that day reached 111°F.
Scholtes appeared in court for a hearing on Nov. 20. A jury trial is scheduled for September 2025, but lawyers on both sides are working on getting a plea deal done, KOLD-TV in Tucson reports.

A doctor's husband who left his two year-old daughter to die in a hot car while he played video games is still with his wife - and now they're in Hawaii.
Christopher Scholtes, 37, is charged with the first-degree murder of two year-old Parker in Marana, Arizona, last July after leaving her to nap in 190F heat.

But a court has just given him permission to go on vacation to Maui with his doctor wife Erika and the couple's two surviving daughters.
News of the court order shows the couple's marriage has remained intact despite a horrific tragedy prosecutors say was homicide.

Scholtes left his Acura running with the air-conditioning on, but allegedly lost track of time while he played on his PlayStation and the vehicle shut off.

The father, who faces a possible death sentence after refusing a plea deal last month, has been on bail since soon after his arrest, and applied to go on holiday.
His lawyers petitioned the court for a change in his bail conditions to allow the holiday to Maui on May 1 to 9, despite the charges against him.

Erika Scholtes has stood by her husband and even strongly defended him in court by calling their daughter's death 'a mistake'.
Judge Kimberly Ortiz approved the request, over the strenuous objections of prosecutors, under the proviso he stayed in contact with pretrial services while outside Arizona.

'The defendant shall further have no unsupervised contact with children,' the order added.

I just...have no words. How could she even be close to him without taking a hammer to his head?

Aaaand he's so arrogant that he thinks they won't convict him so he refuses a plea deal. I'm sure they won't pick jurors who knows about his vacay to Hawaii, but it just makes me wanna smash him in the face all the more. He killed his baby, he doesn't get any more pleasure ever in his life.

And, also, too, I would sever my relationship with his doctor wife, she's not living up to the "first, cause no harm", part of her Hippocratic Oath.

The father charged with murder for leaving his two year old daughter in a hot car had a history of child abuse complaints with another child.

The complaints apparently relate to an older daughter not related to Scholtes current wife.
DCS reports ranging from 2014 to December 2020 show Scholtes accused of slapping the child, leaving bruises, and failing to help the girl manage her diabetes.

There are claims of emotional abuse including referring to the child as “a mistake”.
In 2020 the number of complaints accelerates. Investigators note in some cases they are investigating one claim when another comes in.

DCS reports the child is considering suicide and notes reports of her being called names and treated differently from other children in the house.

There are also reports of the child being denied medication and psychological counseling.
In all cases DCS investigators said they did not see injuries and saw confirmation medication and counseling had been provided.

It ruled the claims as unsubstantiated but the child did move to the care of her birth mother

Christopher Scholtes, the Marana father charged with first-degree murder after his 2-year-old daughter died in a hot car, has just pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

Scholtes pleaded guilty for an amended count of second-degree murder and child abuse for the death of his 2-year-old daughter Parker Scholtes.

Scholtes initially rejected a plea deal in March.
The Pima County Attorney's Office released a statement regarding the Scholtes case processing saying:
Today, Christopher Scholtes accepted a plea agreement and pled guilty to one Count of Second-Degree Murder and one Count of Intentional/Knowing Child Abuse under Circumstance Likely to Cause Death or Serious Physical Injury. Under the terms of the plea, the sentences imposed by the judge are going to run consecutively and Scholtes will face a sentencing range of 20 to 30 years of flat time (meaning he’s not eligible for early release, he must serve the full sentence imposed by the court) in the Department of Corrections for murdering P.S. on July 9, 2024. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our prosecutors, victim advocates, staff for their collaboration with local law enforcement on this complicated and high-profile case. This is yet another reminder to the community that the Pima County Attorney’s Office will do everything we can to get justice for victims and prosecute those who have caused harm to others especially those who are most vulnerable.”

in Arizona's recent triple digit heat

When I was stationed in Tucson, one of the radio stations had a contest every spring to see who could predict ice out on the San Pedro River.The goal was to name the day and the hour that temperatures rose over 100 degrees. I took a quick look, and while I didn't find the hour I did find the date, as well as the last date that the temperature was over 100 degrees. This is the data for the last six years:

* 2020
29 April to 16 October
* 2021
13 May to 16 September
* 2022
26 April to 25 September
* 2023
30 April to 20 October
* 2024
27 May to 13 October
* 2025
11 April to TBD

For almost half the year, the temperature is over 100 degrees. If this guy had been in Marana for, oh, a week or more he would have known that.

I wouldn't last a week! I don't sweat 'normally'. I only sweat from my head, and it takes a lot before I start. I've had heat stroke over ten times in my life, only one of them was on a 100+ day! That's simply terrifying to me! :eek:

An Arizona man who pleaded guilty to leaving his 2-year-old daughter to die in a car in their sweltering driveway while he watched porn inside has now also died — and his demise is being investigated as a suicide, according to reports.
Christopher Scholtes was listed as dead by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office Wednesday, according to ABC 15. His death is being investigated by Phoenix police as a suicide, AZFamily reported.

He was due to report to prison, but never arrived at the hearing where he was scheduled to be taken into custody.
Scholtes pleaded guilty in October to second-degree murder and was expected to be sentenced to as much as 30 years in prison this month, but was due to report to prison before the term was officially handed down.
His older daughters, who he shared with a different woman, even told investigators that he sometimes left them in the car, and would forget about them after being distracted by his video games.
His oldest daughter, who will turn 18 later this month, sued him last week over emotional distress.

In his case, they had proof of him leaving all his kids in cars when he didn't feel like looking after him, all his kids said he did, his wife knew he did, just he thought he was untouchable because he had gotten away with it so far. He turned down the first plea deal for 10-25 years only to change his mind and take the last one which was 20-30 years. I think he finally realized that his luck was over. And then the sniveling asshole took the coward's way out. Good riddance.

I was disappointed in Tim Pool who said he thought the sentence was to harsh and said the father was dumb but did not intend for his child to die.

Maybe he needs to sit in a car turned off in the AZ heat to know what this little girl suffered through until she died.

Tim Pool's got a baby girl now, let's ask him if he would do it even after he's been told multiple times not to.

I go with what reasonable people think and any reasonable person would think this guy basically murdered his daughter even if he didn't mean to, he knew better but he was just a lazy game playing, porn watching, alcoholic who would rather do all that stuff instead of caring for his baby.

I get there are premeditated murderers who do not get what they deserve but it does not excuse what this man did - honestly his kids, and everyone else around him are better off that he is no longer here.

How could he and his stupid ass wife even think about going on vacation after losing their child. Both are garbage.

his wife knew he left the baby in the car and told him not too... wonder how many time she had to tell him not too... but she knew about it, didn't report it and didn't do anything to stop him so she should also be charged with child abuse causing death................ i know if my husband had left a child alone in a car or even with sibs i would tell him only once to never ever to that again or his ass would be grass and i would be the lawn mower....... if he did it again i prob would have made him sit in the hot car and stood beside it with a baseball bat in case he tried to get out... i would wait till he actually passed out before opening the car door , called and ambulance and his stuff would be sitting at the curb when he was looked over and released from hospital.....
