According to court documents, a woman woke up to a light being turned on in the house, and she got up to investigate. She went to check on her four-year-old son, whose bedroom door was open and was confronted by an intruder when she walked in.
Documents say the unknown man grabbed her by the neck and that she screamed, which woke her husband.
The child’s father ran into the room and began fighting with the intruder through the house and into the backyard, where the suspect jumped over a side fence and fled.
Officers responded and recovered the suspect’s sandals, which had been left behind in the home but were unable to find him after searching the area. The boy’s father, who was treated for minor injuries, told police that the intruder smelled strongly of alcohol.
A home surveillance camera also captured video of the suspect as he left through the side door.
Through the investigation, detectives determined that the young boy had been sexually assaulted before his mother confronted the intruder.
The next day, officers began checking nearby apartment complexes. At an apartment building on Thomas Road, staff recognized the man in the surveillance video as Abdullahi Aroni, who lives at the complex. An employee also told police that they saw him arrive at the apartment shortly after 11 p.m. the night before and that he wasn’t wearing shoes.
Police were granted a search warrant later that day, and Aroni was arrested.
According to documents, Aroni’s girlfriend told detectives that he came home intoxicated the night before, barefoot and wearing wet clothes. Aroni reportedly told investigators that he drank heavily the night before, saying “he went over his limit and did not remember anything.”
While police say Aroni confirmed he was the person in the surveillance video, he said he had no memory of going into the home, touching a child or fighting with his parents. He also claimed he didn’t remember “ending up in a pool” after running from the home, which is apparently the reason his clothes were wet, and that he was “sorry for what happened.”
Aroni, 25, was booked on charges including sex conduct with a minor, burglary and two counts of assault. Records show he has prior arrests for other crimes, including rape and robbery.
