A 5-year-old boy — left home alone inside a rat-infested Bronx apartment — was rescued Friday after he was discovered by a FedEx deliveryman, law enforcement sources said.

The boy’s parents, Wilfred Lewis, 59, and Charlotte Lewis, 48, were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after cops discovered the kid in the apartment filled with feces, trash, bedbugs and maggots, sources said.

The deliveryman needed a signature on a package and knocked on the family’s door, which the little boy answered, sources said.

The FedEx man asked where his parents were and the boy responded, “They’re not home,” before the deliveryman flagged down nearby cops for help, sources said.

The mom, a nurse at Montefiore Medical Center, was arrested at work, authorities said.

The father, who claimed his 5-year-old son was “self-sufficient,” surrendered at the 50th Precinct station house, sources said.

The boy’s siblings — two girls, 12 and 13, and a 15-year-old deaf boy — were in school at the time.

The apartment reeked of human feces and a look inside the apartment — through the drilled-out door knob — showed trash strewn throughout the unit.

The family has had previous contacts with the Administration for Children’s Services, sources said.

The apartment was full of feces on the wall, and was infested with rats and roaches.

The mother, 48-year-old Charlotte Lewis, a nurse at Montefiore Hospital was charged with four counts of failure to exercise control of a minor. The father, 59-year-old Wilfred Lewis, an MTA employee was charged with endangering a child and four counts of failure to exercise control of a minor.

My first thought was the FedEx guy was (unknowingly) delivering drugs to the apartment. Glad he contacted police.

These parents had middle class jobs. How could they function at work & fuck up so badly at home?!

I wonder if her quality of medical work was equal to her housekeeping skills?
That was my first thought, too, as I read that line. :vomit::vomit: Makes me wonder about each and every nurse or CNA every time I'm forced to go to the hospital!

With the number of filthy house stories we have on here I always wonder how many more there are out there that never get discovered.

Probably thousands and thousands. I grew up in one. My mother is a hoarder with all that entails. No one ever knew, she would bathe herself every day, even when that meant boiling water cos the hot water no longer worked, or when it meant carting water in huge bottles from town because the water didn't work. She was never ever ever without her make up on and no one visited the house. I was put in foster care, but it wasn't because of the hoarding and filth... and I had 5 brothers who grew up the same way.

Myself as well as a few of friends lived like this as well, it was the 80's though so even if people knew they stayed out of it

My Mom was a nurse and filthy hoarder. Crazy how much many of us have in common here. Fighting an uphill battle with my husbands elderly dog. I Spend hours a day shampooing our carpet. The smell gives me flashbacks.

... he's five, you utter pig, of course he's not self sufficient... and if you're trying to get a five year old to play with stoves and bleach to cook and clean, you need to be nowhere near a kid again in your life.

Since to me 'self sufficient' is able to cook, clean up after themselves, amuse themselves. All things five year olds should not have to know what to do.

When you have a child, you look after it while its young, you don't expect them to do it all themselves, that's how you go from having a kid to NOT having a kid. :punch:

The flies and the neighbors were still buzzing Saturday after a 5-year-old boy was abandoned all night by his parents inside their vermin-riddled Bronx apartment.

Mom Charlotte Lewis, 49, and dad Wilfred Lewis, 59, were arrested for leaving the child home alone — except for the cockroaches, rats and flies.

“A couple of times they would leave the door open and I always told my boyfriend, ‘Oh, that house is kind of disgusting,’” said Deanna Strom, 27, one day after a FedEx deliveryman discovered the lonely boy.

The Kingsbridge Ave. apartment, in addition to the living critters, featured feces splattered across the walls when cops arrived on the scene Friday afternoon.

On top of the repugnant state of the residence, there was no food inside the refrigerator, authorities said.

The parents were arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court Saturday night on endangerment charges.

Prosecutors said three out of the four children recently had scabies and the little boy left alone had bugs on his body and in his coat.

“This is not a case of poverty, but severe child abuse and neglect,” said Assistant District Attorney Nick Lastella.

There was combination of live and dead rodents in the home and “significant blood smears in the apartment, particularly in the bathroom and on the toilet,” Lastella said.

The boy told police that he last saw his parents on Thursday night, cops said.

Authorities found his mother at Montefiore Medical Center where she works as a nurse. Prosecutors said she is enrolled in a masters program at New York University.

The boy’s father is a technician for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The couple has three other kids — a 12-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old boy — although none were at home when police arrived.

All four kids are at Montefiore for observation, prosecutors said. Bail for their parents was set at $15,000.
