A New London stepfather is accused of abusing his girlfriend’s 10-year-old son, locking him in a closet, beating him and depriving him of food and water.
The boy had been removed from school to hide evidence of his injuries, according to court documents.
Police arrested 41-year-old Michael Gregor after responding to a New London home in January to investigate a report of domestic violence and found the boy in a room that locked from the outside, according to court documents.

Authorities said the boy was hospitalized after “living in squalor and inhumane conditions,” and described being “hog-tied,” bound in small spaces, including a wooden box, being beaten if he tried to eat food, and said he thought he was going to die.
The investigation started on Jan. 29 when officers responded to a local diner to investigate a domestic disturbance and the victim told police that her husband had assaulted her in her apartment.

When officers went to the apartment, they found two children in a room and the 10-year-old boy in another room that had a deadbolt lock on the outside, according to court documents.

The boy was malnourished, had several bruises, hair loss and trauma to his ears, described as “cauliflower ear.”
The boy told police that he was being locked for hours in the room, which had only a layer of plastic on the floor, a blanket, and he slept there, court documents state.

There was also a three-foot-long piece of wood in the room that the boy told police Gregor used to hit him.

According to court documents, the boy said he did not know why he was being treated so badly, but most of his communication with Gregor was about using the bathroom and he would get assaulted if he said he did not have to go. If he urinated on himself, he would be locked in the closet and could not change for days.
The boy told investigators that the abuse started in Norwich when the boy lied about taking some food and Gregor hit him in the side of the head and injured his ear, according to court records. The family later moved to New London.

In the past, the boy had been locked in a small closet and was only allowed out to use the bathroom, he told police.

There were holes in the sheetrock and the boy told officers they were caused when Gregor kicked him until he could not breathe, then left him in the closet.
If he behaved, he said, he was moved from the closet to the room police found him in.

His mother had no choice but to help Gregor because he would hit both of them if she said anything about what was happening, the boy reported, according to court records.
The boy was brought to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.

Doctors told investigators that he had several injuries, including rib fractures and a broken finger, and the child’s undernourishment was a major concern.

The child is now in the care of another family member.

The boy’s aunt described him as “the sweetest little boy” and said he has gained 28 pounds in the last seven weeks.
Gregor was arrested and faces charges including first-degree strangulation, assault, cruelty to persons, reckless endangerment, unlawful restraint, and more. He is being held on a $750,000 bond.

Is it a crime to write to an inmate housed with Gregor and let him be informed to the details of the abuse? Let's see how well behaved he will be.

Based on that information by itself, in my opinion, that is not a crime.

However, how would you know who would live with Gregor in the cell without visiting the prison, or inquiring with prison officials (who may not willfully give out such information)?

But would such meddling ultimately be worth it? Gregor, in this scenario, is already in prison; will a letter to his roommate make a meaningful difference when his roommate already knows via implication that Gregor did a bad thing?

Right now, with the pure heart of a child, he accepts his mom couldn't help him, or she would be beaten. Someday, he'll have the horrible realization that his mom, being an adult, could have stopped his torture with a single call to 911. That will take time to process.

Look this monster up and toss the key in a truck of cement and distribute a small amount all around the state this happened in. That should guarantee it would never be found to free him. Why the heck isn't the egg donor charged as well? She knew this was happening and did nothing to save her own ass from a beating. Even when she finally did call the police it was about her. If someone is hurting my child, they better be prepared to kill me as that's the ONLY way they'll stop me from calling the police. My children depend on me to protect them and I will lay down my life for each and every child of mine, heck even my minor nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews.

New London police made a second arrest in a child abuse investigation.

Melissa Gregor, 38, was arrested on Thursday. She was arrested in connection to an investigation that started back in January.

A child was living in squalor and inhumane conditions.

Police confirmed to Channel 3 that Melissa Gregor is the child’s mother.

Authorities said the child spent some time in the hospital and has recovered.

Melissa Gregor was charged with risk of injury to a minor, conspiracy to commit assault second-degree, conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint, conspiracy to commit cruelty to persons, conspiracy to commit strangulation first-degree, and conspiracy to commit reckless endangerment.

Melissa Gregor, who is charged in a 2023 felony child abuse case in New London, and according to police a fentanyl user, was also in court this week and was led away in handcuffs for disobeying a judge's order.
New London Superior Court Judge John Newson on Tuesday raised Gregor's bond after Newson said she essentially gave "the middle finger" to his previous court order to stay away from the guardian of her children.

Newson raised Gregor's bond from $250,000 to $300,000 for allegedly uttering an expletive to the guardian in the hallway of courthouse shortly after her court appearance on June 17.

Gregor was handcuffed in the courtroom on Tuesday and led to a holding cell in tears despite the protest of her attorney, Adam Laben, who only recently was brought in to represent Gregor.

Judge Newson had issued a warning to Gregor on June 17 following complaints from the guardian of her children that Gregor was showing up at unrelated probate court proceedings and making comments or staring at the guardian.

Newson said Tuesday that one of the court's victim services advocates had witnessed Gregor make a comment to the guardian "before you got to the door at the end of this hallway."

"That requires action by the court," Newson said.

Gregor is due back in court on Sept. 3. Her husband, Michael Gregor, remains held on a $750,000 bond on similar charges and is due back in court on Wednesday.

She was disrespectful to Judge Newson and “gave him the middle finger “! and “uttering an expletive “ , Classy! She’s bothering the Guardians, she cursed the Judge, yet she wouldn’t protect her children from Mr Gregor? Until it was her getting the beating! She allowed her own son to be starved, tied up, locked in a closet, beaten and abused ! He gained 28 lbs when he was removed from them! So wrong, makes me really mad! Don’t return these children to her, she won’t protect them, having a boyfriend was far more important to her than her own children! He’s not a real man, just a punk, bully who chooses children as his target! I hope they both meet people in prison that turn them inside out!
