So they searched the property for 5 hours and all's the came up with was a poor beautiful pet squirrel and raccoon...and then they kill them. One of the investigators was bitten during the investigation-by an animal that I am sure was scared out of it wits-so yeah ever so logical to KILL PET animals over this to test them for rabies...One did the biting, both were killed-what logical thinking these people have. I would of just taken the rabies shots, no need to euthanize them on my behalf-especially given the fact that these were PETS-the raccoon was in rehab. I have seen a raccoon with rabies and it is CRAZY, strait out of the movies. Foaming at the mouth, growling and emitting this crazy whining/screaming sound while pacing back and forth-real life cujo shit. I feel bad for these animals and for the owners-to not even know they were put down until the news reported it to them, that's terrible. They were obviously loved and cared for. I now need to know the results of the tests...

And they raided his house for 5 hours why? Because they had what the government considered as 2 "wild' animals? Really??!! If so what a WASTE of tax payers $ and a cruel, crazy abuse of power and abuse of rights-IMO. I would think the founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves at the long arm of the law reaching in and turning peoples lives and homes upside down over a pet squirrel and raccoon. My cat (Dingleberries, AKA Dingles) once got a hold of a squirrel in our yard, we intervened and my kitty dropped the squirrel, he was still alive, could not tell outwardly if he was hurt (no obvious signs) but he was not running off either. He just kind of sat there. Thinking perhaps it was maybe in shock? Internal injuries? If I had been rich and had a vet that would take it...we wrapped it up in a soft blanket, placed him in a bin in our bathroom, put h2o and food in there with him and waited. He was so soft and adorable, he did not make it thru the night-buried him proper in our yard. So should Big Brother come and raid my house and dig up my yard?! That is essentially what they did to this couple-who were kind and loving enough to help what many will not help, your garden variety "wild animals" (squirrels, raccoons, opossums etc). This is a scary place to be when your rights are violated and thrown right out of the window, I cherish my 4th and 14th amm. and the long arm of the law continuously violates these (along with other rights)

P'Nut's owner posted a video of his house post-raid, they fucking destroyed it. Cut open his shampoo bottles, broke the tank on his toilet, ripped out the shelving in the closet. This is extreme overreach for a squirrel, or there is more to this story that what's at the surface.

"The release went on to say that the DEC initiated its investigation into Longo in January after receiving complaints from several New York state licensed wildlife rehabilitators alleging Longo was operating an illegal wildlife sanctuary."
Statement from the DEC Union:
"Following-up on these complaints an Environmental Conservation Officer contacted Mr. Longo informing him that keeping a squirrel is illegal unless he was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with the intent of preparing the animal to re-enter nature.
Mr. Longo told investigators that the squirrel had been released to the wild. After the warning was issued, complaints continued to be received by DEC, and DEC management ordered an investigation.
A DEC Investigator conducted a review of Mr. Longo’s social media accounts which showed that Longo had lied to the investigator and had not released the squirrel into the wild.
In addition to keeping the squirrel in violation of the law, Longo also had taken in a raccoon which appeared in social media postings as well. Mr. Longo’s social media posts were the basis for the search warrant issued by a judge,” said the union.:

While I am absolutely heartbroken for Peanuts human family and believe they should have been allowed to keep & care for him....this brings some questions and makes me a bit angry.
So, apparently Peanuts Dad 1) was warned that it was illegal 2) has a sanctuary that isn't legal?? I'm kind of confused and will have to look into that 3) thought the solution was to lie 4) is blaming democrats when a Republican ran county made the decision. Okay, well....
1, 2 & 3 - They had a decision to make. I'm not saying I think they SHOULD have had to make this decision, but they did, and they were warned. They needed to decide if they were going to move elsewhere and keep Peanut or accept that they are breaking the law and got caught. I've known people who have moved due to animal laws. I've also known people who have had said animals fostered with others, usually at least acquaintances, until they can figure something out. This is extreme, not cheap, but necessary to protect your animal. This family had no issue with money at all, so while I get feeling you shouldn't have to move (and o agree in this case), they were warned Peanut could not legally reside with them there. I'm not sure what they expected to happen. They also could have stopped posting about Peanut. If it comes between making money and cute videos or keeping my pet secret in hopes that they aren't taken from me...I know which one I'm choosing.

This is a tragic case and I feel so bad for Peanut and his humans

It's rumored the seizure was a pretense to search for child porn he may have made with the neighborhood children he babysat in his home and/or tax fraud. (There's some obvious violations going on with the tax-exempt status).
So if framed in those terms, would it still seem like gov't overreach to everyone, I wonder??
But -there was no reason to suspect P'nut had rabies and to euthanize so quickly, not at all. He didn't exhibit signs of rabies, squirrels have never transmitted rabies to humans and he could have been quarantined. I'm sure Longo would have footed the bill, but he wasn't offered that. Then he would have had time to get his license, etc.
It's all pretty shitty.
It was the "Democratic tyranny" nonsense that caught my eye.
My in-laws live there and my mil was the Secretary for the Republican Committee of Chemung County for years, and I knew Democrats were rarely elected to anything except maybe dog-catcher.
I'm not saying Trump doesn't care about animals ( His signature on the PACT Act in 2019 made animal cruelty a federal felony) but I could hardly imagine his aides rushing to him on the eve of the election with news of P'nut.

I think in this case, the nail in the coffin (sorry) for Peanut was that he bit an officer when they came to seize him. At that point, quarantine is really not a viable option, if the purpose was to try to avoid making the officer get vaccinated.
From what I am seeing, in humans exposed rabies, typically the virus starts causing symptoms within 3-8 weeks, but it can be as quick as just a few days, or could be months.
The rabies vaccine needs to be taken ASAP (from what I am reading, no more than 72 hours post-exposure).
There's just not enough time to ride out a quarantine period to make sure that Peanut was OK. I hate that the squirrel died- I'm a total animal lover. But I think the owner is at least partially at fault here too, for choosing to not do things the right way.

And squirrel bites sound like they might not be that bad, but they can be vicious! Those rabies shots can really be a bitch next to a bad wound, so depending on the bite(s), I can see not wanting to have to take the risk. My mother got bit by one when she panicked after our dog caught it in the back yard. She heard it screeching and saw it still laying there, and without thinking, just ran to check on it. That poor, scared bugger tore her hand up!
However....my mom was told she didn't need a rabies vaccine when she went in. Not sure if that was negligence or the norm, so I will just say that say that was her experience.
I'm curious as to how they were handling little Peanut. Was it a police officer? Or animal control officer? I'd hope animal control, but why wouldn't they be prepared for that? I would think they'd have protocol for such things. Wild animals do panic and bite under stress.
Sadly, from what I see so far, it seems poor Peanut was failed by both his human family and the officers in charge of removing him. He paid the price for their mistakes.

Seriously, a less deadly way of testing for rabies needs to be developed. I doubt a lot of money is put into that.
It might be difficult to make the U.S. rabies-free like over in Australia, but it would be nice.

As I figured, there is more to this one than what was at the surface. I don't think this did too much to the election, it was too near. I heard Trump was "fired up" about it but I never heard him actually mention it. Just mainly people on X going crazy making memes with Trump and squirrels, raccoons, dogs, and cats. The biggest narrative was with EVERYTHING else going on this was somehow escalated to the level of a raid and killing. BUT when you factor in possible child porn and an officer getting bit by an animal, maybe all is not what it seemed.
