Peanut the squirrel, an internet sensation that sparked an animal sanctuary in Pine City, was euthanized this week after being seized from his home along with a rehabilitating raccoon, a statement from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation confirms.
The statement released by the DEC on Friday, Nov. 1, confirms that both animals were euthanized to test for the presence of rabies, saying:
You can read the completer statement in the link.

18 News reached out to Peanut’s owner, Mark Longo, before the publication of this article only to find out that the DEC or any other official had not contacted Longo saying the animals were euthanized.

So they searched the property for 5 hours and all's the came up with was a poor beautiful pet squirrel and raccoon...and then they kill them. One of the investigators was bitten during the investigation-by an animal that I am sure was scared out of it wits-so yeah ever so logical to KILL PET animals over this to test them for rabies...One did the biting, both were killed-what logical thinking these people have. I would of just taken the rabies shots, no need to euthanize them on my behalf-especially given the fact that these were PETS-the raccoon was in rehab. I have seen a raccoon with rabies and it is CRAZY, strait out of the movies. Foaming at the mouth, growling and emitting this crazy whining/screaming sound while pacing back and forth-real life cujo shit. I feel bad for these animals and for the owners-to not even know they were put down until the news reported it to them, that's terrible. They were obviously loved and cared for. I now need to know the results of the tests...

Peanut the Squirrel’s grieving owner says he was treated like a ‘terrorist’ in 5-hour raid by NY state

An upstate man whose beloved squirrel was cruelly killed by the state said he was treated like a “terrorist” when 10 government agents descended on his home during a five-hour raid.

Mark Longo, whose pet Peanut captured the hearts of 3 million social media users, was stunned when a convoy of vehicles carrying officials from the state departments of Environmental Conservation and Health arrived at his Pine City home Wednesday.

“They treated me like I was a terrorist. They treated this raid as if I was a drug dealer. They ransacked my house for five hours,” Longo told The Post Saturday.

“They asked my wife, who is of German descent, what her immigration status was. They asked if I had cameras in my house. They wouldn’t allow me to go to the bathroom without a police escort, who then checked the back of the toilet to see if I was hiding anything there.”

But worse than all of that, they delivered his gray fur baby to its death.

I always liked James Woods, now I love'm-thanks very much @ turd Ferguson for posting that link.

And they raided his house for 5 hours why? Because they had what the government considered as 2 "wild' animals? Really??!! If so what a WASTE of tax payers $ and a cruel, crazy abuse of power and abuse of rights-IMO. I would think the founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves at the long arm of the law reaching in and turning peoples lives and homes upside down over a pet squirrel and raccoon. My cat (Dingleberries, AKA Dingles) once got a hold of a squirrel in our yard, we intervened and my kitty dropped the squirrel, he was still alive, could not tell outwardly if he was hurt (no obvious signs) but he was not running off either. He just kind of sat there. Thinking perhaps it was maybe in shock? Internal injuries? If I had been rich and had a vet that would take it...we wrapped it up in a soft blanket, placed him in a bin in our bathroom, put h2o and food in there with him and waited. He was so soft and adorable, he did not make it thru the night-buried him proper in our yard. So should Big Brother come and raid my house and dig up my yard?! That is essentially what they did to this couple-who were kind and loving enough to help what many will not help, your garden variety "wild animals" (squirrels, raccoons, opossums etc). This is a scary place to be when your rights are violated and thrown right out of the window, I cherish my 4th and 14th amm. and the long arm of the law continuously violates these (along with other rights)

14th Amm: no state shall make or force any laws which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny any person within it's jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

SUE THE FUCK OUT OF THEM!!!!! I can think of no other recourse at this time

JD Vance says Trump is ‘fired up’ over death of P’nut the Squirrel: ‘The Elon Musk of squirrels’

Even former President Donald Trump is going nuts over the senseless killing of P’nut.
“I know Don’s fired up about P’nut the Squirrel,” Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, told supporters Sunday about the furry internet sensation euthanized last week by New York state officials.

“He was like, ‘You know, is it really the case that the Democrats murdered the Elon Musk of squirrels?’
“Have you seen the videos of this squirrel? He’s, like, a genius. Or he was,” the Ohio senator continued at a campaign rally in Sanford, North Carolina.

Fans of P’nut the squirrel raise over $158K after beloved pet was euthanized by NY state: ‘Justice for Peanut!’

P’nut the Squirrel’s death has sparked an outpouring of donations, with an online fundraising page raking in well over $158,000 just days after the furry internet sensation was euthanized by New York state officials — sparking outrage from the community and local lawmakers.
The GoFundMe page set up for P’nut’s guardians, Mark and Daniela Longo, has been inundated with more than 3,800 donations as outrage continues to mount over the 7-year-old gray rescue squirrel’s demise.

As of early Monday, the page — called “Call For Justice for Peanut the Squirrel and NYSDEC Reform” — had raised just over $158,500.

The confiscation of a pet squirrel can be held up as the key to understanding “leftist tyranny.” ?

Chemung County made the decision to euthanize, and that county couldn't be more Republican if it was in Grover Norquist's living room.

"The release went on to say that the DEC initiated its investigation into Longo in January after receiving complaints from several New York state licensed wildlife rehabilitators alleging Longo was operating an illegal wildlife sanctuary."

Statement from the DEC Union:

"Following-up on these complaints an Environmental Conservation Officer contacted Mr. Longo informing him that keeping a squirrel is illegal unless he was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with the intent of preparing the animal to re-enter nature.
Mr. Longo told investigators that the squirrel had been released to the wild. After the warning was issued, complaints continued to be received by DEC, and DEC management ordered an investigation.
A DEC Investigator conducted a review of Mr. Longo’s social media accounts which showed that Longo had lied to the investigator and had not released the squirrel into the wild.
In addition to keeping the squirrel in violation of the law, Longo also had taken in a raccoon which appeared in social media postings as well. Mr. Longo’s social media posts were the basis for the search warrant issued by a judge,” said the union.:

More on squirrel daddy and his suspicions:

Longo claimed the home invasion was prompted by complaints from someone who didn’t approve of him shooting intimate footage with his wife, or that he had babysat his neighbor’s children on a separate occasion.
He also told TMZ that everything he’s filmed with his wife has been legal and he’s not using the animals’ deaths to promote his OnlyFans.

Odd that in the last days of an intense campaign, Trump would want to be associated with this:

Do your OnlyFans thing, but leave the squirrel out.
Seems to me the NYDEC was trying to rescue "the Elon Musk of squirrels" from a porn career also.

While I am absolutely heartbroken for Peanuts human family and believe they should have been allowed to keep & care for him....this brings some questions and makes me a bit angry.
So, apparently Peanuts Dad 1) was warned that it was illegal 2) has a sanctuary that isn't legal?? I'm kind of confused and will have to look into that 3) thought the solution was to lie 4) is blaming democrats when a Republican ran county made the decision. Okay, well....
1, 2 & 3 - They had a decision to make. I'm not saying I think they SHOULD have had to make this decision, but they did, and they were warned. They needed to decide if they were going to move elsewhere and keep Peanut or accept that they are breaking the law and got caught. I've known people who have moved due to animal laws. I've also known people who have had said animals fostered with others, usually at least acquaintances, until they can figure something out. This is extreme, not cheap, but necessary to protect your animal. This family had no issue with money at all, so while I get feeling you shouldn't have to move (and o agree in this case), they were warned Peanut could not legally reside with them there. I'm not sure what they expected to happen. They also could have stopped posting about Peanut. If it comes between making money and cute videos or keeping my pet secret in hopes that they aren't taken from me...I know which one I'm choosing.
4 is just LOL in concept
This is a tragic case and I feel so bad for Peanut and his humans :bigtears: but they were stupid about it! The time and resources spent on this case could be used in far better ways, and I wish that had happened, but it doesn't change the fact that this was an illegal act that they were warned about and they kept posting with Peanut like nothing could happen.

It's rumored the seizure was a pretense to search for child porn he may have made with the neighborhood children he babysat in his home and/or tax fraud. (There's some obvious violations going on with the tax-exempt status).

So if framed in those terms, would it still seem like gov't overreach to everyone, I wonder??

But -there was no reason to suspect P'nut had rabies and to euthanize so quickly, not at all. He didn't exhibit signs of rabies, squirrels have never transmitted rabies to humans and he could have been quarantined. I'm sure Longo would have footed the bill, but he wasn't offered that. Then he would have had time to get his license, etc.
It's all pretty shitty.

It was the "Democratic tyranny" nonsense that caught my eye.
My in-laws live there and my mil was the Secretary for the Republican Committee of Chemung County for years, and I knew Democrats were rarely elected to anything except maybe dog-catcher.

I'm not saying Trump doesn't care about animals ( His signature on the PACT Act in 2019 made animal cruelty a federal felony) but I could hardly imagine his aides rushing to him on the eve of the election with news of P'nut.

I think in this case, the nail in the coffin (sorry) for Peanut was that he bit an officer when they came to seize him. At that point, quarantine is really not a viable option, if the purpose was to try to avoid making the officer get vaccinated.

From what I am seeing, in humans exposed rabies, typically the virus starts causing symptoms within 3-8 weeks, but it can be as quick as just a few days, or could be months.

The rabies vaccine needs to be taken ASAP (from what I am reading, no more than 72 hours post-exposure).

There's just not enough time to ride out a quarantine period to make sure that Peanut was OK. I hate that the squirrel died- I'm a total animal lover. But I think the owner is at least partially at fault here too, for choosing to not do things the right way.

And squirrel bites sound like they might not be that bad, but they can be vicious! Those rabies shots can really be a bitch next to a bad wound, so depending on the bite(s), I can see not wanting to have to take the risk. My mother got bit by one when she panicked after our dog caught it in the back yard. She heard it screeching and saw it still laying there, and without thinking, just ran to check on it. That poor, scared bugger tore her hand up!
However....my mom was told she didn't need a rabies vaccine when she went in. Not sure if that was negligence or the norm, so I will just say that say that was her experience.
I'm curious as to how they were handling little Peanut. Was it a police officer? Or animal control officer? I'd hope animal control, but why wouldn't they be prepared for that? I would think they'd have protocol for such things. Wild animals do panic and bite under stress.
Sadly, from what I see so far, it seems poor Peanut was failed by both his human family and the officers in charge of removing him. He paid the price for their mistakes.

Your rabies expertise is suspicious.

I saw a picture of him in tight underwear looking pensively out a window.
The squirrel.
*******

Seriously, a less deadly way of testing for rabies needs to be developed. I doubt a lot of money is put into that.
It might be difficult to make the U.S. rabies-free like over in Australia, but it would be nice.

As I figured, there is more to this one than what was at the surface. I don't think this did too much to the election, it was too near. I heard Trump was "fired up" about it but I never heard him actually mention it. Just mainly people on X going crazy making memes with Trump and squirrels, raccoons, dogs, and cats. The biggest narrative was with EVERYTHING else going on this was somehow escalated to the level of a raid and killing. BUT when you factor in possible child porn and an officer getting bit by an animal, maybe all is not what it seemed.

P’Nut the Squirrel was ‘marked for death’ and decapitation from the start — as rabies test results reveal tragic twist

P’Nut the Squirrel and Fred the Raccoon did not have rabies, officials announced — as it was revealed the animals were marked for death and decapitation days before they were seized by the state.

The internet famous P’Nut and his raccoon pal were taken from an Upstate New York home by force in a raid by state agents on Oct. 30 that sparked outrage and accusations of government overreach as the pets were euthanized to test for rabies.

“Results are negative,” Chemung County Executive Christopher Moss told The Post Tuesday.

A newly revealed timeline shows state officials advised the county to euthanize the pets a full seven days before they were taken from their unofficial caretaker Mark Longo on Oct. 30 — even though the Department of Environmental Conservation later said the squirrel bit an agent during the raid, sparking the need for the test.

“Wildlife cannot be confined like domestic animals, and if there was an exposure, the animals would need to be tested for rabies,” the State Department of Health wrote the county on Oct. 23 — a message that all but sealed the animals’ fates, as rabies tests require decapitation so subjects’ heads can be opened and their brains sampled.

Days later on Oct. 29 the DEC had laid their plans to raid Longo’s home, but the DEC was also already coordinating the animals’ euthanizations with Elmira Animal Control, the county’s timeline shows — directly contradicting their previous explanation that P’Nut had prompted his own euthanization.

“I’m in utter shock,” Longo told The Post when shown the timeline. “I’d like to give you a proper statement, but for now I’ll just say ‘Wow.'”

Longo – who says he still hasn’t received any word from officials about the animals — previously insisted that the animals were rabies-free.

Rabies expert says NYS’s own data reveal why it was ‘insane’ to kill, decapitate P’Nut the squirrel

A rabies expert called New York authorities “insane” for killing P’Nut the Squirrel – saying the state could have figured out if the animal was dangerous without chopping his head off.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. Edward R. Rensimer told The Post the odds were “virtually zero” that P’Nut and his pal Fred the Raccoon had rabies despite state agents seizing the animals in October and then putting them down to test for the disease.

“There have been no squirrel to human rabies transmission ever documented in this country,” said Rensimer, a Texas infectious disease specialist who has been studying rabies for decades.

P’Nut can’t rest in peace.

The headless body of the world’s most famous squirrel is currently being held in a refrigerated room somewhere in upstate New York, The Post has learned.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is preserving it as “evidence” from its agents’ harried November raid on a home in Chemung County, where they seized P’Nut the Squirrel and his raccoon pal, Fred, and then euthanized the beloved pets, according to an agency spokesperson.

P’Nut’s grieving owner finds love again four months after NY bureaucrats slaughtered the famous squirrel

The owner of P’Nut, the world’s most famous and tragic squirrel, has opened his heart and home to a new fur baby, he revealed to The Post.

Mark Longo said he recently adopted a miniature dachshund named Howard — and believes the puppy “may be the reincarnated version” of his beloved squirrel.

“Just to see him run around outside and be best friends with the cat reminds me of P’Nut,” said Longo of Howard.

NY bill would give critters due process after P’Nut the squirrel was seized, beheaded by DEC agents

1744230362926.webp

State Republicans are pushing a bill that would give animals seized by the government a stay of execution after internet-famous P’Nut the Squirrel was decapitated by the government last year.
P’Nut’s grieving owners Mark and Daniela Longo joined with state Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz (R-Nassau) at the state Capitol Tuesday to unveil “Peanut’s Law: The Humane Animal Protection Act” — which would require the Department of Environmental Conservation to wait 72 hours before euthanizing any seized animals.
“I sit here trying not to cry, but passing this law will be a movement to make sure that animal rights are not overlooked anymore,” an emotional Mark Longo told a large crowd gathered at the foot of the Capitol’s Million Dollar Staircase.
“I loved those animals to death,” he added, referring to P’Nut and another pet named Fred the Squirrel that was seized in the same raid and also put down. “And today is a day that we push forward to make sure that this tragedy never happens again.”
The animals’ heads were cut off by state officials within hours so their brains could be tested for rabies after the frightened squirrel allegedly bit a handler’s leather glove — setting off a massive backlash to the DEC’s behavior.
Assemblyman Blumencranz pointed out that the tests which cost P’Nut and Fred their lives came back negative for rabies.

“They were not dangerous. They were not sick. They were not wild threats roaming the streets. They were rescues — loved, nurtured, and safe,” he said.
“Here is the cold, hard truth. It is too little, too late. Words don’t save P’Nut and Fred, and words won’t save the next animal, or the next family, unless we change the law.”
The bill would also require an administrative hearing before any animals can be seized or euthanized from wildlife sanctuaries, unless their is hard proof of an immediate threat to the public.

Revenge of P’Nut the Squirrel: NY authorities executed furry friend — not euthanized him, lawsuit says

P’Nut wants payback.
The beloved pet squirrel and his raccoon sidekick, Fred, were not euthanized – they were viciously executed by New York authorities, according to a blistering new lawsuit.
During the raid, DEC officials claimed, P’Nut bit one of its agents through thick leather gloves, which required the state to euthanize and decapitate the animals in order to test their brain tissue for rabies.

Later, the state admitted the rabies tests were both negative – but it has never apologized nor returned the bodies of either pet.
Longo and his wife, Daniela Bittner, doubled down in a 40-page lawsuit filed Friday in Chemung County Supreme Court.

P’Nut and Fred were slaughtered “not due to a fear of rabies” – but as a “senseless act of violence” and “obscene demonstration of government abuse,” the documents charge.
The suit alleges the bite never happened – and if it did, the agent should have been vaccinated against the disease, and trained in the safe handling of animals.

“The fact that none of these factors came into play demonstrates one of two things – that there was in fact no bite, and this story was fabricated, or, if there was a bite, that it was due strictly to the defendants’ own incompetence,” the court filing states.
Longo and Bittner said their demands for the animals’ remains have been ignored, and that their killings exceeded the scope of the search warrant executed that day.
The couple has suffered emotional trauma and financial losses since losing their star squirrel, who had become an Internet celebrity, appearing in social media posts, OnlyFans content, Cameos and other monetized media, according to the lawsuit.
