Merced County Sheriff’s deputies say they are investigating after the bodies of three young children were found in a Le Grand apartment Wednesday afternoon.

Details are preliminary.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Daryl Allen said deputies responded to the apartment at 13145 Brice St. at 2:10 p.m. to conduct a welfare check. A person was outside the complex, screaming for help.

The three juveniles, all of whom were under the age of 8, were found dead inside an apartment. A woman at the scene was taken to a Modesto hospital for treatment of “life-threatening” injuries, deputies said. The injuries to the woman were believed to be self-inflicted, according to Allen.

Deputies have not released the names, ages or genders of the children who were found dead inside the apartment.

When asked whether foul play is involved, Allen said deputies are still in the initial stages of their investigation, and have not released the cause of the deaths.

“We’re still in the beginning stages of our investigation,” Allen said. “All of our detectives just got out here on scene so we’re currently investigating what happened. We’re trying to collect statements from people who were in the area.”

Allen said there are family members on the scene and they are trying to take care of the situation for them.
A woman was also found in critical condition. She was taken to a hospital in Modesto.

Elias Vargas says he was home when he heard the man screaming then saw him walking back and forth between the complex and Le Grand Elementary, which is just feet away.

"He said, 'My kids were killed!' so that's when I realized something serious happened there at the house," Vargas said.

A woman was found inside the same unit as the children with what officials believe are self-inflicted wounds. She was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Modesto and listed in critical condition.

The sheriff's office hasn't revealed information about her relationship to the children, how they died or who is suspected of killing them.

But neighbors say a married couple and their three kids live inside the apartment.

Maria Elena lives next door to the apartment where the children were found. She says she heard adults arguing from time to time in past, but nothing unusual or concerning recently.

Now, neighbors are waiting for answers about how this unthinkable tragedy could have happened in their quiet, small town.

The mother of three children found dead inside a central California home has been charged with murder, officials said Thursday.

Deputies doing a welfare check found the children, ages 8, 5 and 3, Wednesday in a Merced County apartment. They also found their mother, Patricia Ortiz, with what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ortiz, 31, was taken to a hospital and was expected to be released Thursday and taken to jail, said Deputy Daryl Allen, agency spokesman.

Allen said the children's official cause of death is pending and that he couldn't discuss it further, or describe Ortiz’s injuries, due to the ongoing investigation.

The children were identified as Anna Ortiz Lara, 8, Matteo Ortiz Lara, 5, and 3-year-old Alexa Ortiz Lara.

Neighbor Elias Vargas said he was home when he heard a man screaming and then saw him walking back and forth between the apartment complex and Le Grand Elementary, a few feet away.

“He said, ‘My kids were killed!’ so that’s when I realized something serious happened there at the house,” Vargas told KFSN-TV.

Patricia Ortiz, 31, from Le Grand is accused of killing her three children: Anna Ortiz Lara, 8, Matteo Ortiz Lara, 5, and Alexa Ortiz Lara, 3. After killing them, Ortiz attempted suicide, deputies say.
Ortiz and her husband had separated during the summer last year, according to the woman, and neighbors offered to help her get help. “They actually insisted many times. They saw her distraught many times over the marriage.”

After killing them, Ortiz attempted suicide, deputies say.

Deputies said they were able to give Ortiz life-saving medical treatment on-site and take her to a local hospital.

Ortiz will be booked on three counts of murder.
Deputies found the bodies of the children during a welfare check.

A woman who lived nearby, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for her safety, told the Sun-Star she had heard Ortiz’s husband on Wednesday screaming for help, saying “Help me, my kids.”

She went inside Ortiz’s apartment and others at the scene asked her to call 911.
The woman went in the kids’ rooms and saw all three were dead. “The husband was going crazy. A gentleman was helping (Ortiz) while she was in the tub. She’d slit her wrists and was bleeding. A guy was helping her trying to make sure she was alive,” the woman said.

The woman said it looked as if the children had been dead for at least a few hours, although deputies have not confirmed that’s correct.
“They were cold and just gone. Their lips were already blue,” she said.

The woman said she was told by the dispatcher that she should do CPR on the kids. “We put the little boy down on the floor on his back and the guy proceeded to do CPR.”

The woman said that prior to Wednesday, the victims had walked to school in the morning with other children in the apartment complex. She said she didn’t suspect any child abuse before Wednesday.

Ortiz and her husband had separated during the summer last year, according to the woman, and neighbors offered to help her get help. “They actually insisted many times. They saw her distraught many times over the marriage.”

She added “I believe this is mental health. All her mental health. I really do.”
