"We analyzed 12.3 million sanitation-related 311 complaints placed over the last 365 days to reveal the dirtiest cities in America. Covering categories related to sanitation issues — such as garbage, waste and recycling — we ranked locations based on the number of sanitation-related reports per 100,000 population."

Not all areas have 311, so it's not a great representation.

More graphs at the article.

That’s because in San Francisco, no one bothers complaining, so used to the stink of piss and shit on the sidewalks and street. People stopped complaining years ago when they found they had no rights and it got them nowhere
San Francisco should be #1

LawnStarter.com, whoever they are, produced a list in February that's quite different.

Honestly, I don't put much stock in either list.

Oh, now, @knockout, don't despair, the NYP helpfully pointed out that the top 5 dirtiest cities determined by LawnStarter.com had Democratic mayors. Cling to the small Ah-has!

Cheer up @knockout ! I found an article, while not a ranking, per se, it bemoans San Francisco.
I had to go back a bit, but that's OK.

(As a side note, I did not realize how many of your buddies had traveled to San Francisco to see things with their own eyes! Did you take them on the Alcatraz tour?
Lunch at the Top of the Mark or Acquerello?
Nawwww, a guy like you?
Fior d'Italia or Sodini's for sure. Stick to the classics.
A postcard would be nice once in a while you know. :) )
