A 2-year-old girl has died after being left in a hot car between 30 and 60 minutes in triple-digit heat in Marana Tuesday, police said.

At approximately 4 p.m. July 9, Marana Police and Northwest Fire District went to the area of Paseo Rancho Acero after receiving calls about an unresponsive child inside a vehicle, the department said in a Facebook post.
The child was immediately rendered aid and taken to a hospital but was pronounced deceased, police said.

Further details are limited at this time. The department’s criminal investigations unit is on scene.
The National Weather Service warns that the inside of a car creates a greenhouse-type effect, causing temperatures to rise by 20 degrees in 10 minutes and 50 degrees in as little as less than an hour.

The Arizona father of a child who died on Tuesday after being left alone in a hot car has been arrested by police.
Marana police said 37-year-old Christopher Scholtes is facing charges of second-degree murder and child abuse after investigators uncovered evidence indicating the suspect's 2-year-old daughter was left unattended in a vehicle for up to three hours.
Scholtes allegedly told police the child was sleeping in her car seat when he arrived home that day and chose not to wake her. The father claimed to have left the vehicle on and the air conditioner running while he went inside the residence.

When the mother arrived home, the child was found to still be in the vehicle and the air conditioner was not running, police said.

The child was taken to the hospital and later died.

Police said video surveillance collected from neighbors confirmed the child had been left in the car for about three hours.

Some of the details from the search warrant include:
  • The child was found in an 2023 Acura MDX.
  • The 911 call was made at 4:15 p.m. and crews showed up at 4:22 p.m.
  • The girl had already been brought inside the home, into the kitchen, by her parents.
  • Despite life-saving efforts, the girl was pronounced dead at the hospital 4:58 p.m.
  • The father said he left with his daughter earlier in the day and returned home between 2 and 2:45 p.m.
  • Surveillance video from a neighbor showed the vehicle returned home at 12:53 p.m. and did not leave again, disputing the dad’s claims
  • He claimed he left his daughter in the vehicle because she had fallen asleep in her car seat.
  • He claimed he checked on her once after getting home, and claimed the car was still running at that time.
  • The girl’s mother said she arrived home at 4:08 p.m., which was verified by that surveillance camera.
  • She asked where her daughter was and he said he checked the home and remembered she was in the vehicle.
  • The father’s cell phone was also seized.

He knows Arizona is hot as hell so this was more than a mistake.

He did not want to be bothered with that child and that is why he left her in car.

An Arizona man charged with murder after he allegedly killed his two-year-old by leaving her in a hot car during a heat wave for hours is an “amazing father” and a “pillar of the community,” his wife told a judge.

Erika Scholtes, 35, called her toddler daughter’s death a “big mistake” during a Friday court hearing for Christopher Scholtes, who pleaded not guilty in the death of their youngest child, Parker.
“I’m just asking if you can allow him to come home to us so that we can all start the grieving process so he can bury our daughter with us this upcoming week and that we can go through this whole process together as a family,” Erika Scholtes begged the judge.
“This was a big mistake and this doesn’t represent him,” she added. “I just want the girls to see their father – that I don’t have to tell them tonight that they’re going to have to endure another loss. “
He’s not a risk to the community, she insisted.
In audio provided by KVOA TV, Mrs. Scholtes can be heard calmly requesting the judge let her husband come home while awaiting his preliminary hearing on Aug. 1, so the family can mourn the dead child together.

Scholtes told police he was aware that the vehicle would turn off automatically after 30 minutes, documents reveal.

It wasn't discovered that the child was never removed from the vehicle until the child's mother returned home from work after 4 p.m.
Detectives obtained security video that showed Scholtes arriving home and parking in his driveway at 12:53 p.m. Scholtes went inside the family's home joined by the child's two siblings, aged 5 and 9.

The vehicle was parked in direct sunlight.
Police talked to the Scholtes' two older children and it was discovered that he "regularly" left the children alone in the vehicle, according to the documents.
The document reveals that the children said Scholtes "got distracted by playing his game and putting food away" while their sister was in the vehicle.
While the 2-year-old girl was being rushed to the hospital, Scholtes received a text message from his wife.

The message read: "I told you to stop leaving them in the car, How many times have I told you."

Scholtes responded: "Babe, I'm sorry."

His wife then responded: "We've lost her, she was perfect."
Scholtes responded: "Babe our family. How could I do this. I killed our baby, this can't be real."

Mom you want to keep defending this piece of shit! Did she not think they would take their phones?

it was 109 degrees!! What did he think the outcome would be? How oblivious are you that you leave a 2 year old child strapped in a car seat, in direct sunlight in 109 deg?? I think he should have to sit in the car for three hours, in the direct sun, let’s see how long he lasts! If I were the wife, I don’t think I would want to see him for a while! He may not be safe in my presence!

I hope, but I have been here to long to be that optimistic.
Same really... especially when I consider the immeasurable rage I would feel in her shoes having literally told him repeatedly not to leave the kids in the car, and then how much more intense that rage would become finding out he lied about when he left her out there and that he KNEW the car would turn off in 30 minutes.

And the surveillance cameras should have shown if he actually did go to check on the car, but I couldn't find anything to say whether they did or not.

For the first time one of Christopher Scholtes' daughters is speaking publicly after the tragic death of his two-year-old daughter Parker earlier this month.

Parker died after being left in a hot car for several hours, according to Marana Police.
The News 4 Tucson Investigators discovered that Scholtes has a 16-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

That daughter, who requested we hide her identity, told News 4 Tucson Chief Investigative Reporter Chorus Nylander in an exclusive interview that she wasn't surprised when she heard about her half-sister's death.
She said Scholtes would leave her alone inside of the car, sometimes for hours, since she was as young as seven.

"It makes plenty of sense, actually I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner," she said. "{Once} I had to go sit out in the car for four to five hours and continuously had to restart the car and had only eaten once that day."

She has Type 1 diabetes so that proved dangerous for her.
She said she didn't even meet her father until she was five, then a bitter custody battle developed between her mother and Scholtes.

She said eventually, against her wishes, Scholtes was able to get custody of her and she spent four years living with him and his wife Erika.
She described that period as a nightmare.

"It genuinely has changed me as a person. I will never be the same person I was before I moved into their house," she said.
It got so bad in 2021 she said she tried to kill herself because she didn't want to live with her father.

Child Protective Services got involved and Scholtes lost custody of her. She went to live with her mother until her sudden death in May.

Now she lives with her legal guardian named Lindsay, who requested we don't use her last name, she is her best friend's mother.

"I'm so happy I can help her and that she's here and safe and doesn't have to go through anymore of anything now it's just the healing process and a safe space to grieve," Lindsay said.
The daughter has a lot of grieving to do with the recent death of her mother and half-sister.

She believes Parker's death could have been prevented.
"If they [CPS] would have taken away my little sisters when I was taken away none of this would have happened. I haven't been eating, I haven't been sleeping. All I think about is how my father's walking free right now," she explained.

She said she's received a call from detectives in Marana and is now involved in the case and hopes to testify if her father's case goes to trial.

Hopefully no plea deal is given and the jury believes that he had a pattern of doing this.

Also the mom of the toddler needs to be arrested - she was fully aware of what this man was doing.

What a lazy dick face. Sometimes we read cases where something throws off a routine, like an alternate parent taking the kid to daycare and literally forgetting the child is in their care. There have been a ton of studies about what makes folks have one-time lapses like this. But this was premeditated and he had done it numerous times for convenience. I've had to grit my teeth and take a newly napping child out of a carseat to run a quick errand at a store. It sucks. You have this screaming banshee in your ear and then deal with a cranky kid for the rest of the day.

But this is different. He had done it more than once so he could have a break. It was careless and stupid. He needs to spend the rest of his days in prison.

Arizona dad who left toddler in hot car to die says little in not guilty plea on 1st-degree murder charges

The Arizona father accused of leaving his toddler in a boiling hot car to die pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance since being charged with first-degree murder.

Christopher Scholtes, 37, entered his plea but otherwise said very little Thursday in Pima County Superior Court, KGUN reported. He refused to speak to reporters.

So glad they upgraded the charge to 1st Degree Murder! He surely deserves it, how can someone be so stupid and lazy to leave your most precious child alone, and locked in a sweltering car?? My apologies to his Daughter, I wish you the best life has to offer, you are very brave to step up and offer your testimony.

Considering the history - he clearly saw the car as a place to park his kids while he could do w/e he wanted. But add to this - - in Arizona? In a desert in the summer? Clearly, this man is too stupid to parent.

Some shitty parents use car seats for this purpose by pulling the car seat out of the car, and letting the child be trapped in it while in the house. But the kids he was doing this to were overall too old for that.

Fuck that idiot.

As for the woman of the relationship:

"I told you to stop doing it" there comes a point when you are either going to work something else out, or watch your kids die, if you know what I'm saying. It was probably clear by that time that he had priorities other than listening to you.

Because she was aware of what he was doing she should be charged as well.
