When the Memphis Police Department responded to an animal cruelty call at a home on Kipling Avenue, they were met by Memphis Animal Services staff who informed them that 13 dogs had been found on the property.
According to the affidavit, they found 13 dogs, a mix of puppies and adult dogs; all of the dogs were malnourished, covered in feces and urine, and had no access to food or water. One of the puppies found was dead.
Upon further investigation, it was learned that the suspect, later identified as Shamika Farmer, lived at the home with her young children.
Officers say that when Farmer was questioned, she claimed that taking care of the dogs was her children’s responsibility and she had no experience in pet care.
Farmer was taken into custody and is now facing 13 counts of aggravated animal cruelty to animals.
