Stephanie Shanks, 58, of Dayton, has been arrested on a warrant on multiple charges related to the death of her grandson, Charles Brown.
On March 30, Shanks reportedly called 911 to report Brown was “cold and unresponsive,” according to Heck. Paramedics then responded and pronounced him dead.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck said Shanks acted as the babysitter for Brown, a twin and another child during the weekends, while the mother works.

Allegedly, straws with drug residue were found inside of the grandmother’s residence. Drug powder was also reportedly located in the home.

“When you look at how incredibly dangerous these drugs can be to adults, what they can be for a 5-year-old child,” said Heck. “It’s just absolutely ridiculous.”
Shanks is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail on the following charges:
  • 1 count of involuntary manslaughter
  • 3 counts of child endangering
  • 1 count of drug possession

A woman has learned her sentence after the overdose death of her 5-year-old grandson.
Stephanie Shanks, 60, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of endangering children, according to court documents.

By entering a guilty plea, Shanks agreed to a prison term of four to six years.
Charles Brown, 5, had a lethal dose of fentanyl, fluoro fentanyl, and xylazine in his system, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

Shanks babysat Brown, his twin sister, and his 3-year-old brother on the weekends while their mother worked.
