After a 2-year-old was shot and killed Sunday evening, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said that the incident occurred while the child was playing with a loaded handgun Monday afternoon.

Warren Bennett Osar, 2, was suffering from a gunshot wound to the body and was discovered near a vehicle in the back of the property, according to the sheriff’s office.

The circumstances ahead of the pulled trigger were also shared by the sheriff’s office.

Detectives said the child had “climbed into his dad’s pickup truck through an open door, and was playing with a loaded handgun that was inside the vehicle. The child was able to discharge the weapon, which resulted in injuries to himself.”

Both of the boy’s parents were at the scene when first responders arrived, according to a release from the sheriff.

Warren was transported to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton, where he died from his injuries.

As far as any possible charges, the sheriff’s office said the shooting “is considered to be an unfortunate accident at this time; however, this investigation is ongoing.”

Unfortunate accident my ass. A loaded gun just sitting in an unlocked truck when he knows he lives with a toddler. Yes he lost his kid as punishment but he should also lose the right to ever own a gun again since he has proven himself an idiot.

Not to mention.... my cousin left her car unlocked and her 3 yr old got in there to "play" and knocked the car out of park. It rolled across the street into a field before she caught up to him. She's lucky there wasn't a pond across the street or any other cars driving by at the time. Or a really hot day and he didn't get noticed right away. They sort of laughed it off but I was horrified.

Don't leave dangerous things unlocked for fucks sake. We lock our kitchen cupboards when we have toddlers. We lock our friggin toilet lids and wash machine lids. But a whole ass vehicle or a loaded gun? Nah, junior will be fine.

no only was the vehicle unlocked but the door was left open ... who the hell does that when they have small children??? especially if the have a loaded gun in the vehicle??? and doesn't guns have safety locks on them anymore??? if there is one why not make sure the safety lock is engaged???

The boy’s father, Warren Tyler Oser, will now be charged with failure to properly and safely store his firearms to protect minors, the district attorney’s office announced.

Both of the toddler’s parents were home with him at the time. He was rushed to Johnson Medical Center Clayton, where he later died from his injuries.

“My heart goes out to the parents as they grieve the loss of their son. These tragedies are 100 percent preventable by safely storing all weapons away from minor children as required by statute,” said County District Attorney Susan Doyle.

A Johnston County father has pleaded guilty to a charge he faced after his 2-year-old son accidentally shot himself after finding and playing with his father’s gun.

Warren Tyler Oser faced a misdemeanor charge of failure to store firearms to protect a minor after his son Warren “Bennett” Oser shot himself after finding his father’s gun in his pickup truck on Oct. 16.

An investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office found that three firearms with no safety mechanisms engaged were left unattended in Oser’s truck, according to a news release.

The 2-year-old found a 40-caliber Smith & Wesson in his father’s parked truck behind their home while his father was nearby fixing a lawnmower, authorities said. The toddler died at Johnston Medical Center Clayton that evening.

The child’s parents called 911 and cooperated with authorities in the case, according to a news release.

Warren Tyler Oser pleaded guilty to failure to store firearms to protect a minor. He was given probation and ordered to perform community service acts that promote gun safety around minors.

Oser was charged after his 2-year-old son Warren "Bennett" Oser shot himself in the head at the family's home on October 16. Johnston County Sheriff's Office found that three firearms with no safeties on were left in Oser's truck.
The two-year old gained access to one of the firearms, a 40-caliber Smith & Wesson, while his father was nearby fixing a lawnmower. The parents immediately called 911 and cooperated with deputies. The boy later died at the hospital.

Assistant District Attorney Jason Waller said the case required the district attorney's office to balance sympathy for the loss of a loved one against the need to promote gun safety and responsibility, especially around minors, in Johnston County.
