An Ohio social worker was arrested for having sex with a 13-year-old boy she was assigned to counsel, according to police and local reports.
Payton Shires, 24, allegedly admitted to the disturbing behavior during a call with the boy’s mother and detectives from the Columbus Police Department, according to reports.

Shires was previously employed by the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP), a group which specializes in working with families involved in the foster-care system, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

It remains unclear whether she was assigned to the boy through NYAP.
The boy’s mother contacted police Sept. 27 to report her suspicions after allegedly discovering inappropriate text messages between her son and Shires, court documents showed.
Cops allegedly conducted a search of the phone and discovered footage of the boy and Shires having sexual contact.

When investigators interviewed the boy, he reportedly admitted to having sex with Shires on at least two occasions in September.

Shires was arrested Friday after allegedly admitting her behavior with the boy to his mother on the call monitored by police.

Many learned to get their emotional needs—for love, attention, approval—met through sexual behavior." Once they start teaching or performing a job where they are the authority, if faced with some kind of serious stressor (marital problems, for example) in addition to the right child sitting in their class or being under their authority, it's not a far leap to becoming a sex offender. This is crazy and she was engaged to be married, as well. This needs to be a mandatory 20+ year sentence for each occurrence. Maybe then we can halt the statistics of this happening at schools, with public social workers, other authorities over minors. I realize I would be a hard judge.

A Mount Sterling, Ohio, social worker arrested on her 24th birthday earlier in October was thrown back into the Franklin County Jail on Friday after she allegedly went to the home of a 13-year-old she’s accused of sexually abusing and threatened to shoot the boy’s mother and herself, claiming the parent “ruined her life.”
Payton Harleigh Shires, who got her social worker license in the Buckeye State as recently as June 12, 2023 and was employed with the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP), was reported to the Columbus Police Department in late September on the allegation that she engaged in unlawful sexual conduct and that she admitted as much during a phone call with the boy’s mother as cops listened in.
Given the allegations that Shires showed up Thursday evening at the alleged victim’s home and threatened violence, she was hit with two felony counts of intimidating a crime victim victim/witness by force or threat, her bond was revoked, and a new mug shot was taken.

Authorities alleged that when Shires called the boy’s mother on Thursday and claimed the parent “ruined her life,” the mother saw her on camera sitting on the porch with a gun. Shires allegedly threatened to take her own life.

Your pussy and poor impulse controls are what ruined your life.

The Ohio social worker accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy in her care is engaged to a man who served time for child endangerment and faced charges for raping a 14-year-old girl.
Payton Shires, 24 — who was charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor after the boy’s mom discovered disturbing text messages between the pair — has a child with her fiancé Nicholas Rafter, a 27-year-old plumber, the Daily Mail reported.

Rafter has been jailed for nearly five years after being convicted of two counts of burglary and one count of child endangerment, the outlet reported.
Rafter was accused of drugging and assaulting a 14-year-old girl when he was 19 years old.

He allegedly gave the girl a “drug, intoxicant or controlled substance to her surreptitiously or by force, threat of force, or deception,” the Daily Mail reported, citing court documents.
He was charged with rape, sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, but the charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to child endangerment, the outlet said.
Rafter spent four years and 11 months behind bars before being released early in August 2017, according to the report.

After he was released, Rafter was reportedly placed under an intensive supervision parole for five years and was subject to random drug screenings until July 2022.
He spent the time in prison three years before he began dating Shires, who has expressed support for the death penalty for pedophiles on social media – where she shared an image with the message: “Dead pedophiles don’t reoffend.”

A formal social worker accused of sexual conduct with a minor has pleaded guilty in court Tuesday.
Payton Shires, facing eight felony counts, including four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, pleaded guilty to seven of eight charges against her in Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. Shires, who was also charged with two counts of intimidating a witness/victim, and one count each for discharging a firearm and inducing panic, was scheduled for a trial hearing before entering the plea.
Shires was accused of having sex with a 13-year-old boy, who she was assigned to provide mental health counseling services through the National Youth Advocate Program. She admitted to police that she participated in multiple sex acts with the boy. Court records indicated the incidents took place on Sept. 16, Sept. 22 and Sept. 27 of 2023.
Shires was also charged with two counts of witness intimidation when, according to Columbus police, she violated the terms of her $500,000 bond and went to the victim’s home. There, she threatened to kill the mother of the victim and herself. She reportedly was in possession of a gun and fired a shot when she arrived at the home on Oct. 26.
The victim’s mother filed a civil complaint against Shires and the National Youth Advocate Program, accusing it of failing to remove her son from Shires’ care when she alerted the nonprofit of the inappropriate sexual relationship.

The lawsuit detailed that from August to September 2023, Shires engaged in sexual acts with the teen victim in multiple places in Franklin and other Ohio counties “within the course and scope of her employment with NYAP.” The mother informed the nonprofit of what was happening on Sept. 22, two weeks before police would take Shires into custody.
State records confirmed that Shires’ social work license remained active as of May 28, 2024. There were no details available regarding a possible suspension or forfeiture.

Payton Shires, of Mount Sterling, pleaded guilty in May to four counts of unlawful sexual misconduct with a minor, one count of inducing panic with a firearm specification and one count of intimidation to a victim or witness. A second count of intimidation and discharging of a firearm was dropped as part of her guilty plea.
During her sentencing, Shires apologized for what happened and said she felt horrible for the mistakes she made.

"I just hope [the family] can find peace from this, that they can find peace and trust with their social workers in the future," she said.

I know many people in social work and my oldest is getting ready to start college with the idea in majoring in social work. You HAVE to set boundaries. Sex with a minor should be blatantly obvious, but one has to go into this knowing the majority of cases can't be resolved or properly taken care of, and that sucks, but it's the reality/nature of the job and issues faced.
