A pregnant mother shot in the back is recovering at an Indiana hospital, as her husband faces several charges in connection with the incident.

Vanna Sowles, who is seven months pregnant with her third child, was hospitalized in life-threatening condition after she was shot in the back, near her spine, last Monday. She’s still recovering in the hospital more than a week later, WPTA reports.

“Her injuries are very extensive, fractured vertebrae. The bullet went through her kidney, hit her liver,” said Carrie Whipple, a friend of the victim.
Vanna Sowles’ husband, 25-year-old Terry Sowles Jr., is facing several charges in connection with the shooting. Fort Wayne Police responded to a call from the suspect last Monday in which he said he accidentally shot his wife.

The couple was arguing about infidelity prior to the shot being fired, according to court documents. The documents say Terry Sowles told police he threw his gun on the ground in anger, and it went off, striking his wife.

According to the documents, detectives told him that the physical evidence at the scene showed the bullet was in a straight-line trajectory, not in an upward motion as it would have been if things happened as he described.

A man received a suspended prison sentence Monday after claiming he was mentally ill when his pregnant wife was shot last year.
A judge in Allen Superior Court handed Terry Lee Sowles Jr. an 11-year sentence with all those years suspended.
According to court documents in the case, Sowles was the one who made the 911 call, claiming he accidentally dropped his gun and a shot hit his wife in the back.
But their young daughter told police it was intentional.

Sowles went on to tell police he had been arguing with the victim, who suspected he was cheating on her. He said he’d picked up a gun that he supposedly intended to put in a safe, but as the conversation escalated and the woman began to walk out the door, he got mad and threw the gun behind him, causing it to fire off a round through the door, according to his statement in court documents.
Court records show Sowles eventually pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a count of aggravated battery. Because the plea deal was accepted, several domestic battery charges were dismissed, along with criminal recklessness.

Per his plea agreement, Sowles must complete a program on alternatives to violence and submit to a psychological evaluation.

He better never have access to the children again.

Allegedly prior to the shooting she founf pictures of him with another woman and they had been arguing.
