The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has busted nearly two dozen men seeking sex with kids during operation “April Fools.”

Marion County deputies, with assistance from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, conducted an undercover operation that resulted in the arrest of 22 men who thought they were meeting underage children.

Law enforcement officers exchanged messages with 19 men who ultimately traveled to various locations in Marion County thinking they were meeting a child between the ages of 12 and 16 for sexual activity.

According to deputies, during the exchange, these men engaged in sexually explicit conversations with people they thought were underage children.

The state said it won't file charges against Damien Michael Shade, 21, who had been accused of unlawful use of a two-way communications device and transmission of material harmful to minors by electronic device or equipment.

In a court filing, the state said only that although there was probable cause for his arrest, based on the facts and circumstances of the case, the likelihood of conviction at trial was slight.

Ire Jermaine Bethea Jr., was adjudicated guilty of soliciting prostitution/ lewdness or assignation when he entered a guilty plea on June 8 in front of County Judge Jim McCune, according to court records.

The judge sentenced Bethea to 39 days in jail. The 38-year-old man had already served that time while at the Marion County Jail while awaiting resolution of this case.

Bethea also was sentenced to one year of probation and he must complete a basic life skills class within 120 days, show proof of STD and HIV testing within 30 days and undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation. He cannot have any intentional unsupervised contact with minors, and he must complete 40 hours of community service and pay fines and court costs, court documents indicate.

According to evidence presented at trial, on March 30, 2022, Mojocoa responded to a social media posting offering a minor child for sexual services in return for cash. The post had been made by an undercover law enforcement officer. The fictional child purportedly suffered from many physical disabilities, including paralysis and autism. Over the span of two days, Mojocoa spoke to an undercover officer about engaging in sex with the 12-year-old girl. After settling on a price, Mojocoa drove to an agreed-upon location to engage in sex with the child. Once arrested, law enforcement recovered lubricant and candy in Mojocoa’s possession. During the negotiations, Mojocoa had agreed to bring those particular items for his encounter with the child.
