The Twin Falls Police Department is investigating the death of a newborn girl found in the Safe Haven Baby Box at Grove Creek Medical Center in Blackfoot on October 13.

The Blackfoot Police Department responded to the scene and initiated a death investigation. The Twin Falls Police Department has since assumed responsibility for the investigation, according to a press release, and is "working closely with our partners at the Blackfoot Police Department."

The Safe Haven Baby Box program offers parents in crisis an option to securely and legally surrender their infants, "allowing parents to relinquish their newborns without fear of prosecution." However, in a Safe Haven Baby Box press release about the incident, it says "Anonymity is only allowed when an infant is safely surrendered completely unharmed."
"Grove Creek Medical Center staff responded immediately to the alarm, indicating a baby was in the box," said Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes. "The medical team removed the infant from the bassinet within a minute. Upon removal, they quickly realized that the infant had passed away long before being placed in the baby box. The Safe Haven Law in Idaho allows for the surrender of an infant who is unharmed and healthy. Therefore, this was not a legal surrender under state law as it does not meet the criteria for Safe Haven surrender."

Update: The Bingham County Coroner's Office confirmed that the family of the deceased infant has been found and the body has been returned to them.

An 18-year-old allegedly left a newborn baby in a hospital's Safe Haven Baby Box that had already been dead "long before being placed in the baby box."
Police responded to a call from Grove Creek Medical Center regarding a dead newborn baby that had been dropped off in the hospital's Safe Haven Baby Box, according to a press release.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are deposit boxes in which mothers can anonymously relinquish newborn children without the threat of prosecution. When a baby is placed into the box, the hospital is alerted and quickly retrieves the child.

When hospital staff opened the box "within a minute" of the deposit on Oct. 13, they found a dead newborn baby that police later determined had likely been dead "long before being placed in the baby box," according to a statement from Safe Haven.
Investigators said after a month of investigation they were able to track down 18-year-old Angel N. Newberry, who they identified as the woman who deposited the baby on Oct. 13.

Blackfoot police said Newberry was arrested on a felony charge of failing to report a death to law enforcement officials and the coroner.

The cause of the newborn baby's death is still ongoing.

I think her name should have been withheld until it was determined.

Angel Newberry, 18, received one year of probation for failing to report her newborn's death.
If Newberry violates probation, she could face the 180 days in jail, with credit for two days already served.
According to court documents, Newberry had hidden her pregnancy from her family and gave birth alone in a bathroom inside her home on Oct. 12, just days after her 18th birthday.

Detectives say there is evidence she tried to take care of the baby, but also say there is evidence that she knew the baby was dead when she placed her in the baby box.

Newberry did not make a statement during her sentencing hearing.
