A former middle school teacher in Buckeye is accused of having a 12-year-old student for multiple sleepovers even though he doesn’t have a daughter.
Thirty-six-year-old Brendan Barnett, who was a social studies teacher at Verrado Middle School, lied to the girl’s parents and said he was the parent of a student who would be attending the sleepovers, police said.
Investigators said he was alone with the victim at his Phoenix home at least three times.
Litchfield Elementary School District officials called the police on April 12 after they learned of possible inappropriate chats between Barnett and a preteen in the school’s online communications portal.
In an email to parents, the district said Barnett was then removed from the classroom and placed on leave.
He was later indicted on one count of luring a minor for sex and three counts of kidnapping, police said.
