A North Las Vegas woman is charged with murder and child abuse following the death of her 5-year-old nephew this past summer, according to arrest and court records.

Krystle Evans, 36, was arrested in July by North Las Vegas Police after the young child was taken to UMC in cardiac arrest on June 29.

In an arrest report, North Las Vegas Police wrote that the 5-year-old arrived with difficulty breathing before he was pronounced dead. Firefighters called to respond had noted he appeared to be a victim of abuse.

Police said they found bruises on his body, cuts around his eye, along with what appeared to be old burn scars behind his knees.

Investigators spoke with Evans, identified as the boy's paternal aunt. She had full guardianship of the boy, along with three of his siblings, because both the mother and father were in jail. Evans also has three children of her own, and all of them lived with the children's grandparents.

Evans told police the boy appeared to be fine the day before he was brought to the hospital. She said she saw him drinking ginger ale in the early morning and told him to go to sleep. He then lied down on his back on the floor and started to breathe heavily and gasped for air, she told police.

Evans said they didn't have working air conditioning and tried to cool off the boy, according to the report. When he stopped breathing, she called 911 and performed CPR until medical personnel arrived.

The six remaining children were taken for interviews and told police that Evans would beat the children with a belt and toy bat. One child said the 5-year-old got in trouble with Evans that morning because he took water and soda from their grandmother's room.

Police wrote that one child had several bruises on their ears, collar bone and left arm, while another had broken blood vessels in one eye from being slapped in the face, a bruise on the forehead, a bruise on the leg and scars on the neck, back and leg.
