Latonya Shante Thomas, 27, of Flint, has been charged with felony murder in the April 25 death of her 3-year-old son, Zaveion Thomas.
Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive 3-year-old boy.

Upon their arrival, deputies said they saw Latonya attempting to perform CPR on Zaveion.

Paramedics transported Zaveion to the hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.

An autopsy later revealed the 3-year-old toddler sustained injuries consistent with an assault. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

A mother from Flint pleaded no contest this week to killing her 3-year-old son at an apartment complex in Pontiac last spring.

Court records show 28-year-old Latonya Thomas pleaded no contest in Oakland County Circuit Court on Monday to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse.

A charge of first-degree felony murder was dismissed in exchange for her plea.
The no contest plea indicates that Thomas does not admit guilt for the death of 3-year-old Zaveion Thomas, but she will accept the punishment. She faces up to life in prison when she appears for sentencing on Aug. 25

Latonya Shante Thomas learned her fate in the murder of her 3-year-old son at Monday's sentencing in Oakland County Circuit Court.
She was sentenced to two counts of 15 to 60 years for second-degree murder and child abuse first degree, which she pleaded to.

Her defense attorney said Thomas, who has three children from different fathers and was a single mother, had a history of being abused physically and sexually growing up, and has a history of mental illness.
She read a statement to the court asking for forgiveness.

"As a mother we are put on earth to protect and cherish our children," she said. "Because of my pride being too high and my selfish ways, I chose not to ask for help when I needed it resulting in the death of my son."
Her attorney said that Thomas had lost her job and her home and was living with two other adults in a two-bedroom apartment with eight children - adding that Zaveion had special needs.

"I am so sorry for everything that has happened," she said. "I am so ready to change my life and become a better person, a better mother and a better child of God. I am willing to accept any consequence."
Judge Daniel O'Brien said her words were beautiful.

"You said you failed as a mom, I would like to say you didn't fail yet as a mom because you are still breathing," he said. You didn't fail because you still have life ahead of you. You're only a failure at the end if you continue down a bad path which I don't see, frankly quite the opposite."
"The court believes the proper sentence on both counts is 15 years to 60 and I appreciate the recommended middle sentence of 20," O'Brien said. "It's not me, it's mercy that the court recommends 15 years to 60.

"God bless the children and they all love you all of them." (Kamala would be so proud of this word salad)

Do not care about her history she chose to have two more children after the first so fucking and getting pregnant was not so much of a problem for her. Her choice is partners and patience to deal with children was a self imposed choice.

Abstaining and/or birth control was always an option and available to her.

To the brain dead judge Zaveion is dead so this piss poor excuse of a bio-pod is a failure.

The reason why the judge cannot see her going down a bad path is because she has no children to beat on or kill.

This idiot judge needs to realize if she got away with killing Zaveion and had her other children in her care she would just scapegoat one of them and start the cycle of cruelty all over again with that child.

No, judge, she did fail as a mom. Since when is you breathing a sign you did not fail?! Her son is not breathing because of her! Literally the definition of failing as a mother.

And using your past abuse as a "cause" or "explanation" for killing your own child is insane. Once you're grown, I'll sympathize with your struggle, but it is up to you to get help. You were not forced to have/keep multiple children.
Unfortunately, there are young teens, including myself, who found themselves pregnant while still being (what I consider) children and still being abused, but somehow they manage not to murder their children. If anyone would have an excuse to snap because of childhood abuse, it would be those still suffering from it. If you're not currently a minor still suffering from that abuse, I don't care about it in relation to a crime.
