A young child was killed at a campsite in Bartow County after apparently playing with a pistol on Saturday night, according to Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap.

Millsap said deputies were summoned to campsite on Chitwood Cove in the Wilderness Camp Road area just after 8:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a young child shot.

According to a release from Bartow County officials, the child had been taken from the campsite prior to the arrival of law enforcement by persons at the scene. They were met on another roadway by law enforcement and EMS.

The release said that rescue units evaluated the child and transported the child to an area hospital. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

After an initial investigation Kimberly Anne Roberts, 47, and James Phillip Lillie, 50, were both arrested and taken to the Bartow County Jail. Roberts is the child's grandmother, and Lillie has no known relationship with the child.

According to the sheriff's office, Roberts is being held on a felony probation violation and Lillie was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation remains underway. Both Roberts and Lillie face additional charges, according to the sheriff's office said.

Two suspects that were charged with manslaughter had their charge upgraded to murder Wednesday afternoon.

According to Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap, additional warrants have been filed for 50-year-old James Phillip Lillie of Cartersville and 47-year-old Kimberly Ann Roberts in the May 16th death of 5-year-old Ashley (Raegan) Danielle Roberts. The death was believed to have been from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after having been playing with a pistol at a campsite off Chitwood Cove Road near White in the Wilderness Camp Road area.

Lillie and Roberts were arrested and initially charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Roberts was also charged with felony violation of probation.

After further investigation and review, both Lillie and Roberts have been charged with murder. The facts of the investigation have not changed. However, with Lillie and Roberts being convicted felons and possessing a firearm which later caused the death of the child, the BCSO states this led to the application of murder charges under Georgia law.

Jame Phillip Lillie and Kimberly Ann Roberts were arrested on May 16, 2020. Lillie and Roberts were both charged with felony murder and second-degree murder. Both were also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Tuesday afternoon,
Lillie pleaded guilty to first-degree cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He received a 30-year sentence, ten to serve in custody and the remainder on probation. He must pay restitution in the amount of $1,274, funeral expenses for young Ashley Reagan Roberts. The shooting occurred while the family was camping. The child’s mother and father along with her grandmother, Kimberly Roberts, and her boyfriend were on the trip. The two couples slept in separate tents. At one point in the evening five-year-old, Ashley asked to sleep in her grandmother’s tent. She entered the tent alone. At 8:30 p.m., the group-heard gunshots and found Ashley injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The child found the loaded gun owned by Lillie in the tent.
Fifty-one year old, Lillie told responding officers that the gun belonged to him and he was a convicted felon. He later said he had 8 beers the day before the camping trip. He left the campsite to get more beer and food. While out, he also retrieved his gun and took it to the campsite. He drank 12 beers on the day of the shooting.

Following sentencing, Judge Suzanne Smith told Lillie that she was aware he did not pull the trigger but it was the responsibility of adults to supervise children, that was his duty.
Co-defendant, 49-year-old Kimberly Ann Roberts entered a guilty plea earlier this month. She pleaded guilty to first-degree cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. She also received a 30-year sentence, ten years to serve incarcerated, and the remainder on probation.
