Two men are behind bars after investigators with the Lee County Sheriff's Office found 16 dogs across two properties in deplorable conditions.
According to Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, Anthony Pew Sr. and Anthony Pew Jr. were arrested on charges of dog fighting, dog baiting, and animal cruelty, all felonies.
According to the Sheriff, investigators responded to a call on March 30 to a home [redacted). There they found dogs living in cages filled with urine and feces who were malnourished and had wounds consistent with dog fighting.
Investigators say evidence led them to a second home in Lehigh Acres, where they found "more of the same," as well as equipment used in dogfighting.
"It infuriates me to announce another animal cruelty case," said Marceno. "I've made it clear that I will protect those that cannot protect themselves."
According to the Sheriff's Office, this is the largest dogfighting case in recent Lee County history, with a total of 16 dogs rescued from the two properties.
The dogs were treated by veterinarians at Lee County Domestic Animal Services. All of the rescued dogs are alive, but several require constant medical care per the Sheriff's Office.
"I have said it from day one. If you abuse and neglect an animal in this county we are going to hunt you down," added Marceno. "We will track you down and you are going to prison."
