A Florida man tried to become a police officer, but his application failed and he instead went to jail after admitting under questioning that he abused a young girl by playing “little sexual games” when he was a teenager.
Stephen Roland Bodley’s job interview with the Apopka Police Department took place in June 2021 and led to his “life felony” conviction at a jury trial last Wednesday in Orange County.

The office of 9th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Andrew Bain said that Bodley, now 26, was convicted of committing sexual battery of a child under the age of 12 when the defendant was not yet 18. Bodley was found guilty largely due to his own prior admissions, even though he denied the abuse when he testified in his own defense at trial.
“On June 16, 2021, Bodley was conducting a job interview at the Apopka Police Department for a position that he applied for as a sworn police officer. The certified voice stress analysis examiner performed a voice stress examination on Bodley. During the examination, the examiner asked Bodley to expand on concerning answers he provided in a pre-test questionnaire,” prosecutors said. “In it, Bodley described sexually abusing a child several years ago. He admitted the same when the examiner asked him to explain further.”
Authorities said that Bodley admitted to sexually abusing the victim “on three separate occasions.”
An affidavit in support of Bodley’s arrest warrant detailed that abuse took place between the beginning of 2012 to the end of 2016.

Prior to a “Voice Stress” exam, Bodley had completed a written questionnaire that asked him if he had “ever sexually assaulted anyone.” He answered in the affirmative, adding that the assaults occurred at his Apopka home.
“Defendant Bodley wrote that he had when he was 12-13 years old and the incident occurred 10 years ago. Defendant Bodley wrote as an explanation ‘I would play sex games with [redacted] and she didn’t fully understand what was happening,'” the affidavit said. “I inquired further of Defendant Bodley to explain his written response. When asked how old the victim was he stated, ‘I can’t remember, but um, but what do you call it, yes, um, I used to, um, play these little sexual games, like oral with my little [redacted] and I known she, she didn’t know fully what was going on, and I used to watch porn a lot, so I had like a little addiction when I was younger.'”
The series of admissions was shocking enough, but Bodley didn’t stop there.

“Detective Landry asked Defendant Bodley to clarify what sex games meant. Defendant Bodley stated he pulled his penis out, then he switched to explain the first time it happened was an ‘accident,'” the affidavit said. “He explained that he was going to his room naked and she was laughing and then she put her mouth on it (referring to his penis). Defendant Bodley stated that it gave him an idea to ‘play this game’ and he would play the game with her ‘all the time.'”
Even more surprisingly, Bodley clearly stated that he knew what he was doing and the 9- or 10-year-old victim did not.
“Defendant Bodley stated, ‘me knowing what it was, she probably didn’t know what was going on, and so that’s why I put it there,” the affidavit continued. “When asked how old the child was, he stated he believed she was 9 to 10 years old at the time and that she was not too much younger than he was. When asked how many times he thought it happened, Defendant Bodley stated ‘probably’ 3 times.”

So I am going to assume it was his little (redacted here) sister, or cousin or niece-someone more than likely related to him. So not only did he admit it all during an interview utilizing "voice stress" analysis-he expanded on it further providing more details AND put it in WRITING on the application to be a cop?! Then he tried to deny it on the stand? TG this complete degenerate is also a complete and utter MORON and practically buried himself all by himself-no help needed.

The story says that there were three years of age difference. I read elsewhere that 20% of confessions are false. He probably didn't do anything else that bad since he was 12 years old. Life in prison for a 12 year old defendant seems too harsh. If your 12 year old son did this, would you be prepared to have him go to jail for life? He will have a hard time getting a job for something he did back when he was 12. Does everyone think that 12 year olds deserve this much hate when a job applicant was being very honest?

It would be, but it not be:

On May 8, a jury found Bodley guilty of Sexual Battery on a Child Less than 12 by a Person Less than 18 after a three-day trial.
According to the release, Bodley is set to be sentenced on June 24.

The 'Life Felony' throw you off? That's particular to Florida.
Half the outrage could be avoided if it was remembered states have their own practices and terminology.

From the Justice department of Florida:

Below are examples of offenses classified as felonies:
.....
Life: Sexual battery when the sexual conduct was engaged in by someone 18 years of age or older against a child under 12 years of age.
.....

Does everyone think that 12 year olds deserve this much hate when a job applicant was being very honest?

He was 'honest' because he didn't think it was a big deal.
To him, lying to the interviewer was a greater sin than sexually abusing a child.

He admitted the crime, so yes, he must be judged in a court of law.
His actions, the crimes, those remain unchanged no matter what.

If I ran over and paralyzed you does it make any change in the impact being paralyzed had on your life- whether I did it on accident, on purpose, while drunk, if I didn't even notice, 1 hour later or 10 years later, or I was caught or confessed voluntarily?

His victim.

I think reviewing the definition of Justice might be to your benefit, here's a generic one from wikipedia:

"A society in which justice has been achieved would be one in which individuals receive what they "deserve".
The interpretation of what "deserve" means draws on a variety of fields and philosophical branches including ethics, rationality, law, religion, equity and fairness.
The state may be said to pursue justice by operating courts and enforcing their rulings."

Kids do stupid shit all the time. Sure this is bad and he should be punished, but I think the person he's grown into as an adult should weigh into the punishment. Seems like those that don't deserve a 2nd chance get it while those that should be given the opportunity never get it.

Echoing @Josh P ,if you take him at his word, and I don't see anywhere where the victim gave any statement, he fucked up and deserves to be punished. I think the sentence is fair though. A 12/13yr old boy with full access to a 9/10yr girl is pretty much the wild west. It's redacted but one would assume this is a sister, stepsister, relative, or someone living with his family. He wanted to be a cop and freely admitted to this in the interview. He could have taken this info. to the grave. If he was older, then yeah, rot in hell. Hopefully everyone can move on from this.

I'm not standing up for him or defending him. What I'm saying is, I bet he didn't know at 12 he'd be a convicted felon on the sex offender registry for his actions years later.
