The passenger in a U-Haul truck found carrying a dismembered body has been charged with burglary, abuse of a corpse, criminal trespass, theft, and tampering with evidence, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Taray Herring, 47, was arraigned Saturday morning and ordered held without bail.

Police spokeswoman Cpl. Jasmine Reilly said that the Medical Examiner’s Office is still working to confirm the identity of the torso found in a trash bag in the back of the truck and other body parts found in trash bags in a dumpster behind a nearby strip mall. The body parts, some of which were reportedly deep-fried, are consistent with an adult male, she said.

The bizarre incident began Wednesday when someone from out of state called Philadelphia police and asked for a well-being check on Peter Gerold, saying he hadn’t been heard from for “some time.” Officers checked the house, Reilly said, which appeared properly secured with no pile up of mail. Officers did not enter the home, she said.

The following morning, police responded back to the home to a call about a burglary in progress. Police followed a U-Haul truck they saw driving away from Gerold’s home and pulled the vehicle over a short distance away, as CrimeOnline previously reported. The driver got out of the truck as police approached and said, “I don’t want anything to do with this, and there’s a body in the back.”

Officers took both the driver and the passenger into custody, but the driver was released and Herring, the passenger, was charged.

After talking with Herring, detectives searched the dumpster behind the strip mall, where they found black trash bags containing hands, feet, and cut-up legs, a source told the Inquirer. The hands and feet, the source said, had been deep-fried.

A source also said that other body parts were found in a detached garage at Gerold’s home along with evidence that someone had attempted to burn a body. Police said that they found a weapon in the back of the U-Haul but have not said what kind of weapon it was.

This is the victim, Peter Gerold.

This is his web site. It has not been updated since 2013. The news report says that he ran his licensed massage business out of his home. Per neighbors, the perp was seen doing odd jobs around the victim's home for the few weeks prior.

1101 Sanibel Street is listed on the web site, but that isn't a house number that I can see from Google satellite view, as the whole street is all 100x numbers. But this is the house in the news broadcasts, as seen in Google street view from summer 2019. House number is 1011. 8 years is a long time to have a typo in your business address on your web site, huh.

The whole property was trees and plants and such, if you don't count the buildings. Although considering the outside, I bet he had plants inside, too. The news story did say that he had small animal pets so yeah could be.

It is as though he built a little world for himself, but a consequence of bringing criminal strangers into that world is that they murdered him in it and nobody was able to know or help.

They haven't charged the perp with murder at this time, but everything else so far such as abuse of a corpse, etc. News report states that there were tons of cameras all over the property but someone took the computer that recorded the prem. So, I think it's clear what happened (and who is responsible for removing the computer).

This is how close the possible-murderer and the victim lived. Perp's address reported by sex offender web site as 600 RED LION ROAD ,APT D1, PHILADELPHIA, PA 19115.

This is the front of the building where the perp lived. Entrance D is not visible from Google street view, it's behind the building.

Would have been a beautiful yard had it been maintained.. wonder what’s up with all the cameras.. it amazes me people leave recording systems so easily open.. I have three locks - 3 separate key locations.. none ever on me.. it’s a waste of time and money if not used properly and efficiently..

Wonder if that's the work he had the criminal doing, trying to get it back under control?
I suspect that the virtual forest, trees etc. were largely as the owner wanted them, and it being February with snow on the ground, the odd jobs seem unlikely to have been directly related to the foliage. Guy was 70 tho so I can imagine where there was some shit around there which he felt he could use help with.

This poor mans loved ones can thank the disgusting and corrupt District Attorney Larry Krasner for his horrific murder if he had maybe kept this criminal scum locked up and not treated him with kid gloves Mr gerold would be alive.
this link will run down the constant arrests and releases of tarray herrings, scumbag and deep fryer master. https://www.bigtrial.net/2021/02/u-haul-driver-carrying-body-parts-got.html?m=1

This occurred to me. Hindsight being 20/20 it would have been wiser to get a little info via an internet search. Search finds some info although it might not have uncovered the whole history (I'm not even using Google, still found some).

He had his own issues though for sure, you can tell by the profession. Massage therapists are fucking creepy weirdos full on. Not saying there was anyfunny business goin on, but it's not surprising he wouldnt do some due diligence and/or would chooseto hire another lunatic.

"No body, no crime!" -- Taray Herring, 2021

Murder charges. Tased the victim, bound his hands and feet with tape, and then choked him to death.

There were 2 people present when the victim was murdered:

  • Taray Herring, 47, perp who initially had been charged with abuse of a corpse, burglary and other things
  • A woman, Jeanette Pace, 43

The woman's new boyfriend, Rafique McNichols, was not present for the murder, but is being charged with burglary after the fact. He has however related that the girlfriend Pace told him how the murder went down.

Per the Philadelphia Inquirer:
McNichols allegedly told authorities Pace told him Herring tased Gerold and, after he fell, Pace and Herring bound Gerold’s hands and ankles with tape.

“Why are you doing this to me, Taray? I tried to help you,” Gerold allegedly said, according to McNichols.

Pace and Herring then dragged Gerold’s body into his garage, where Pace told Herring to cut off Gerold’s hands and feet and “deep fry” them, according to court documents. She also told Herring to pull out Gerold’s teeth, the documents say.

“No body, no crime,” Herring told Pace, according to McNichols’ interview with detectives.

As of March, the murdering pair were both in Philadelphia's prison system according to local news, and I found this just now:

Found a .pdf dated February 13 with the original charges:

This was him back in 2013:

Search engine is not finding the court related .pdf with the updated murder charges.

None of this will bring the victim back from a murder he did not deserve (unless you count being too trusting as deserving to die, but that is a separate perspective). Anyway, there it is.

A man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal murder of a massage therapist in Philadelphia's Somerton neighborhood.
A jury found Taray Herring guilty of murdering 70-year-old Peter Gerold.
Gerold was found dismembered in a U-Haul truck in February 2021.

After being found guilty by a jury, Herring was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

Jeanette Pace and Rafique McNichols were also charged in connection with Gerold's death.

Rafique McNichols

In March 2024, Rafique McNichols was sentenced to 11 ½ to 23 months in prison, plus 10 years probation, as part of a negotiated deal with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy, theft, and receiving stolen property.
In February 2021, Herring’s ex-girlfriend Jeanette Pace told jurors he called her and told her there were birds and reptiles he wanted to sell on the dark web, saying he would give her a portion of the money.

Pace, who was addicted to heroin at the time, told jurors she needed to pay bills and was down on her luck, so she made her way from South Jersey to Philadelphia to help Herring.
When the two arrived at Gerold's house, she said Herring handed her a taser to use on Gerold, which she did, but it failed. That’s when she says Herring tackled Gerold to the ground as he exclaimed “Why are you doing this to me? I was good to you!”

Herring, she said, tied up Gerold and threatened his dog to get pins and passwords to his credit cards. Pace told the jury he then ordered her to try the cards at Wawa, which she did. When she got back, she saw Gerold dead, with ligature marks around his neck and his nose nearly cut off.
Throughout the next several days, she said Herring tried to dispose of the body, first trying to set it on fire, but eventually storing it in the shed.

Pace said she got her boyfriend at the time, Rafique McNichols, to help. He came to the house days later and got into Gerold’s safe, taking money and other items.

At some point, McNichols and Pace left the house in Gerold’s car and Herring was left to clean up.
