A man is in custody after police said he shot and killed a teenager who accidentally knocked on the wrong apartment door.

It happened at The Retreat apartment complex on Fairburn Road in southwest Atlanta on Friday morning.

According to police, 19-year-old Omarian Banks got a ride home in a Lyft, and was dropped off near the wrong breezeway around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Police say Banks and his girlfriend had just moved to the apartment and Banks wasn't familiar with the area. He went to what he thought was his apartment – upstairs and to the left – but he was at the wrong door.

Banks was using FaceTime to talk with his girlfriend when he knocked on the door. Shortly after, he began to walk away from the door. That's when police say the man inside, Darryl Bynes, 32, grabbed a gun and went onto his balcony to confront Banks. Police say after a short conversation, Bynes shot the teenager.

"I heard him say, 'Sorry, I'm at the wrong house.' Then the man said, 'No you're not. N****, you at the right house.' And he shot two more times,” Banks’ girlfriend told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach.

Another witness told a similar story.

“I see him running around the corner and all you hear him saying is, ‘I am sorry. It was the wrong door,’” “(He said), ‘You ain’t come to the wrong door’ and shot him a third time. I saw him drop to the ground.”

Police say Bynes initially told police he shot Banks in self-defense, but officers say he shot the teen from his balcony as Banks was coming down the stairs, trying to get away.

His family told Pozen they don’t think he should be charged with murder.

“He is an innocent father. He has five kids. He was protecting his family. His truck was stolen earlier this week, right now, he's just trying to protect his family,” said his cousin, Makayla Johnson

He wasn't trying to break down the door and had already walked back down the stairs. The man could've simply not answered the door, seen the knocker was gone/'walking away, and gone back to bed. Such a senseless act.

Only a complete fucking idiot would open the door in the first place, no matter the race or gender or time of day/night. All the more reason to believe this wasnt misplaced self defense and was a well thought out, deliberate 1st degree homicide. If he was worried or scared the guy was a criminal, why did he open the door in the first place? He was looking to kil lsomeone .This can not be denied or argued.

It's one thing to take precautions, is another to murder someone as they are running away from your doorstep upon realizing their innocent mistake.

A Fulton County jury found a man guilty of killing a 19-year-old who knocked on the wrong door at an Atlanta apartment.

Darryl Bynes stood trial for the 2019 shooting death of Omarian Banks. Prosecutors say Bynes, a husband and father of five, shot and killed Banks after the teen mistook Bynes’ apartment for the one he and his girlfriend shared at The Reserve off Fairburn Road in Atlanta.

The attorneys for the defense say the shooting was in self-defense. On Thursday, the jury revealed a guilty verdict on all counts.

On Friday, a judge sentenced Bynes to life in prison on the murder charges. In addition to his sentencing on the murder charge, a judge added 15 years for criminal damage to property in the first degree and possession of a firearm during a felony to be served consecutively.
