A 10-year-old child was so severely abused and neglected that he weighed the same as a toddler. Now, the woman responsible will serve 20 years in prison.
Latasha Leonard, 35, pleaded guilty to one count of felony child abuse. Judge Steve Ratcliff sentenced Leonard to 30 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections with 10 suspended and five years' probation. Leonard was also given a no-contact order, forbidding her from contacting the victim.
In 2017, Madison County Child Protective Services received a complaint about possible neglect. When law enforcement initially attempted to investigate, Leonard denied the child's existence.
Upon a further investigation, a malnourished 10-year-old child was found in Leonard's home, living in a "small space between a dresser and a wall" in the home "almost 24 hours a day."
According to the release, the child was "frequently tied up, beaten and denied food by Leonard." He was 3 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 41 pounds — the size of an average 3-to 4-year-old child — upon admittance to the hospital. The child also had an untreated broken femur bone that had healed with no apparent medical intervention, the release said.
He was placed in a therapeutic foster home and has received care from various practices at Univeristy of Mississippi Medical Center, including getting eyeglasses, hearing aids, growth stimulants, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. He also started pre-K after coming into CPS custody, at the age of 11, and has since learned to read and write and is now getting ready to enter the seventh grade, the release stated.
