A 4-year-old boy is dead after he was left alone for hours in a hot SUV with the window cracked while his father worked an event in downtown St. Paul, according to charges filed Monday.
Kristopher A. Taylor, 26, of Apple Valley, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with second-degree manslaughter in connection with the boy's death Saturday.
Taylor, working at the Minnesota Monthly 8th Annual Grillfest at CHS Field, parked his SUV "entirely exposed" to the elements, the criminal complaint read.
The boy's mother left the boy in Taylor's care around 2:30 a.m. Friday while she went to work, the complaint noted. Taylor's son was identified by a close friend of the family as Riley Taylor, the couple's only child.
Taylor said he last checked on Riley about 11:30 a.m. Saturday and returned about 5:15 p.m. after work to find the boy "stiff" and unresponsive, the complaint continued. Taylor then took the boy to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Medical Examiner's Office ruled preliminarily that Riley died from hyperthermia. Taylor told police he lowered one window roughly one-quarter to one-half inch for the boy, according to the complaint. He said he gave Riley a handheld video game to occupy himself.
He said he didn't think it was too hot to leave the boy in the SUV, and did the same about a year ago with no problems. However, the complaint continued, Taylor said he left one window down entirely in the earlier instance.

A father was sentenced to a year in jail after he left his 4-year-old son in a hot car that caused the latter's death.

"I miss my son, I miss him a lot, and no one can hate me more than I hate myself," Kristopher Taylor said, as he stood before Ramsey County Judge Robert Awsumb Friday before sentencing. "I think about it every day... to go back and change what I did... every time I breathe, every time."

Taylor, 26, was handed down his jail term on Friday, October 11, after he pleaded guilty to the second-degree manslaughter of his son, Riley in the parking lot near CHS Field in St Paul, Minnesota on May 4.

Taylor's sentence would include six months in jail term, followed by six months of electronic home monitoring. He was also ordered to undergo grief counseling at the insistence of the Juers and work with probation officers.
Taylor told the authorities that he failed to find childcare for his son during the time he was supposed to work at the Grill Fest event and hence, he had to resort to leaving the victim inside an SUV with a video game to keep him occupied. He even cracked a window, which he thought will be sufficient ventilation to keep the young boy comfortable, KARE11 reported.

After the father returned from work nearly six hours later, he found his son was unresponsive and stiff. Taylor rushed the victim to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The father probably punishes himself more than any sentence could.

I hope he learns from this and never leaves another child in a vehicle alone under any circumstances.
