A 3-year-old child and a 1-month-old baby were living in a home “overwhelmed with foul odors including garbage, feces and body odor,” cops say.
Police went to the home, in Altoona, Pa., on a tip about potential child abuse.
When officers entered the residence of 24-year-old Destyni Cassatt and 27-year-old Daniel Deterline, they say they were “overwhelmed with foul odors including garbage, feces and body odor,” and there were “garbage bags piled to the ceiling, filling half the room.”
The criminal complaint says there was a cat litter box overflowing with feces and garbage, including chicken wing bones, were seen on the floor. Police add the mound of garbage would be consistent of several months' worth or more.
There was more trash in the kitchen, including moldy food, dead bugs and piles of dishes, police say, adding: There was garbage piled in the bathroom including used toilet paper and dirty diapers.
There were more dirty diapers found piled in one of the bedrooms with flies and bugs crawling over them, according to the complaint.
Police say Blair County Children, Youth and Family were called and advised to remove the children from the home immediately.
In wake of the incident late last week, the couple now faces felony child endangerment charges.
