Two adults have been arrested after a 5-year-old Jennings boy died after being shot with an unattended weapon on Thursday.
Jennings Police Chief Danny Semmes said investigators determined the victim, Adaun Gains, and four other children ages six and under were left unattended inside the Gallup Street home when the shooting happened.
Kurstin Richard, whose children were among the unattended juveniles, and 26-year-old Desome Daniels were arrested and booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail in connection with the shooting.
Officers responded to the home after a neighbor called 911 at Daniels’ urging. Investigators found 5-year-old Adaun suffering from a gunshot wound and took the boy to a local hospital in a police unit, but he died about an hour after reaching the hospital, Semmes said.
Investigators allege Daniels waited 15 minutes before seeking help in order to hide the firearm used in the shooting and to stash marijuana police believe he was smoking while he was supposed to be watching the children. Semmes said the gun in question was a stolen firearm stored in Richard’s bedroom.
The gun and marijuana were recovered when police executed a search warrant on the home, the police chief said.
Jennings investigators determined Gains’ mother and Richard, who are relatives, lived at the home together with their children. Gains’ mother was at work when the shooting happened; she expected Richard to watch the children, and was not aware the children were left in Daniels’ care, Semmes said.
Daniels was arrested on principal to negligent homicide, five counts of cruelty to juveniles, five counts of improper supervision of a minor, two counts of obstruction of justice, five counts of possession of controlled dangerous substances in the presence of a minor and possession of a stolen firearm.
Richard was arrested on principal to negligent homicide, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm. She is currently on probation for a previous conviction of possession of a stolen firearm.
