Police in Oakland County are investigating the death of a toddler who was found unresponsive in a bathtub while his father was in another room.

About 11:18 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, sheriff’s deputies responded to a house in Commerce Township for a possible drowning. A 1-year-old boy had been found in the tub with his face under water while his father — who had been bathing him — was in another room.
The boy’s mother was performing CPR on him when deputies arrived. Deputies took over until Commerce Township fire paramedics arrived.

Several hours later, the boy died at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.
The boy’s 37-year-old father told deputies he was bathing his son when his phone rang, prompting him to go into another room to answer it. The mother was at the store at the time.

Deputies said the father was “unsteady and abnormally calm when describing what had happened to his son,” Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard detailed in a press release. The father was later interviewed at the Sheriff’s Office Commerce Township substation. While seated in the interview room, he fell asleep and slumped over in his chair, the sheriff said.
Deputies arrested the father and a blood sample was drawn from the father to see if illegal drugs were in his system, the sheriff said.

Bouchard said detectives are investigating possible child neglect charges against the man.

John Brannon, 38, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse in 52-1 District Court in Novi. His son, Charlie Brannon, died Dec. 10, 2021, during a bath after John Brannon allegedly left the room, according Child Protective Services records.

A CPS investigator was at the house after Charlie died, according to records. She saw pills sprawled on the countertop and microwave and noted that Brannon was slurring his speech, repeating himself and appeared to be falling asleep.
He told the investigator he stepped away from Charlie in the bathtub for 45 minutes, then he corrected himself to say 45 seconds, according to case records.

Another child in the home told the investigator he had seen needles in the home before and that Brannon had passed out and was taken to the hospital twice after using needles.

A Commerce Township man was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison after his son drowned in a bathtub more than two years ago.

John Brannon, 38, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced in Oakland County Circuit Court on Monday to a maximum of 15 years. He will be up for parole in three years, said his defense attorney, Patrick Gagniuk.
Brannon's son, Charlie, died Dec. 10, 2021, in a bathtub. He was 1 years old. Child Protective Services records show that an investigator was at the house after Charlie's death and found pills on a countertop and microwave. The investigator said Brannon was slurring his speech, repeating himself and falling asleep, the Detroit News reported.
Brannon originally was charged with second-degree child abuse in addition to involuntary manslaughter. The charge was dismissed, according to sentencing documents.
