Timothy and Crystal Keener said three of their grandchildren were at home in Kingston Thursday night when shots were fired at the Van Buren Street house.

Two of the children, standing in a bedroom, were struck by gunfire and one, a 12-year-old girl the Keeners identified as D'Janeira Mason, was killed.

The second victim, who the Keeners identified as 10-year-old Dansi Mason, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“This gang bang (expletive) needs to stop out here," Timothy Keener said. "Right now, you’re not safe to walk down the street to Christmas shop or sit in your own living room or bedroom. A 12-year-old child died in her bedroom because she was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s how unsafe this town is.”

Two Kingston men were arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old city resident on Dec. 17.

Gilbert Thomas, 24, and Robert James, 46, also face felony charges of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal use of a firearm.

Both were involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of D'Janeira Mason and injuring of her 10-year-old brother Dansi Mason, who was shot in the arm, according to police.

Mason and her four siblings were in their home — the rear apartment of 60 Van Buren Street — when a fight broke out near the home, followed by gunshots, grandparents Timothy and Crystal Keener told Spectrum News Friday afternoon.
Dj’aneira was shot in the head, friends and family said, and she died at the scene.
