Timothy and Crystal Keener said three of their grandchildren were at home in Kingston Thursday night when shots were fired at the Van Buren Street house.
Two of the children, standing in a bedroom, were struck by gunfire and one, a 12-year-old girl the Keeners identified as D'Janeira Mason, was killed.
The second victim, who the Keeners identified as 10-year-old Dansi Mason, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
“This gang bang (expletive) needs to stop out here," Timothy Keener said. "Right now, you’re not safe to walk down the street to Christmas shop or sit in your own living room or bedroom. A 12-year-old child died in her bedroom because she was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time. That’s how unsafe this town is.”
