A 1-month-old has died after police say the infant was attacked by a dog inside a home over the weekend.

Lafayette Police Department officers responded to the home around 11:30 a.m. Saturday for a report of an infant that had been attacked by a dog.

The arriving officer found a dog, a pit-mixed breed, standing over an injured infant. In order to get to the infant, the officer fired one shot at the dog, killing it, police said.
The infant, Julian Connell, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Prior to attacking the infant, witnesses told police that the pit-mix had been fighting with a beagle-mix inside the home.

The beagle was taken to Purdue Veterinary Hospital for treatment of its injuries. It is unclear how badly the dog was injured.
Police said the family's pit bull mix and beagle mix dogs had been fighting and the brother separated the dogs.

"The two dogs were engaged in some sort of a fight in the bedroom where the infant was staying. The brother was actually able to separate the beagle away from the pitbull, take it out of the room and when he returned, he found that the pitbull had attacked the infant," Lafayette Police Lt. Matt Gard said. "The infant did suffer some catastrophic injuries."

The first officer to arrive at the home found the pit-mix dog standing over the severely injured infant.

"He could see that the baby had some pretty severe injuries and he believed the infant needed immediate lifesaving aid," Gard said. "Unfortunately, in order to render aid to the infant, the officer did fire his handgun one time, striking the dog, killing it."

Julian was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Tippecanoe County coroner said a preliminary autopsy showed the baby died from multiple sharp force injuries from dog bites. The coroner is calling the attack accidental.

It's not clear where exactly the baby was in the bedroom when the attack started. Police say the baby's mom was home at the time of the attack.

Gard said the incident is affecting officers on the force in Lafayette.

"A lot of our officers have young children of our own and seeing this is definitely tragic incident. It's one we hope we don't have to encounter again," Gard said. "Supervision of your children at all times is paramount. You never know, even the most friendly dog could turn. You never know."

I can't even began to imagine the guilt the young man feels for leaving the room... I hope in time he realizes it's not his fault and he could have never seen that such a terrific thing was about to unfold. I have deep sympathy for the family for loosing a child and the deepest empathy for the young man.. I hope he heals in time and with great compassion from his family..

We had a problem with two of our dogs when my first grand was small. We were having to keep the two dogs separated, but through an error on our part they managed to get together and a fight broke out with Ella in her walker. I put myself between them and her, and my son wrangled them out of the room. He took the attacking dog to be euthanized that very day. We weren't going to chance having their fights involve her.

The one that was put down was a rescue whose life was extended by 6 years or so after he was dumped on me. Someone who came with friends to bring a used appliance just left him at my house, and he was heartworm positive. So, I was able to give him some good years in a comfortable home, and I don't feel bad about what we did.

Jennifer Nicole Connell's dog killed her 26-day-old son, Julian, on Jan. 25, according to prosecutors who charged her with three counts of neglect of a dependent.

Lafayette police arrested Connell, 38, Tuesday at her home.

It is the same home where, six months earlier, Connell's pit bull terrier killed her infant.

Connell had two dogs living in her home on Jan. 25, and one of them, the pit bull terrier mix, was aggressive toward the other dog, as well as to Connell, her teenage son and her infant, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Connell told police she was trying to find the pit bull terrier mix a new home after a recent incident in which the dog had become aggressive toward the infant, according to the affidavit.

Late in the morning on Jan. 25, Connell's infant was left on her bed to sleep, but the aggressive dog got into the room and attacked the smaller dog, according to the affidavit.

The teen removed the smaller dog, which was injured, and returned to the bedroom to find the aggressive dog on the bed standing over the infant with blood on its mouth and chest, according to the affidavit.

When police officers arrived, they shot the aggressive dog to get to the infant, who later died from his injuries.

Investigators found the residence littered with animal feces and dead mice in various states of decay, according to the probable cause affidavit.

For keeping the aggressive dog in the house with her infant, prosecutors charged Connell with neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury.

For keeping her teenage son and her infant in what prosecutors described as an unsanitary and unsafe house, prosecutors charged Connell with two counts of neglect of a dependent.

Hard agree. People aggressive behaviour means the dog gets put down. There are plenty of dogs who aren't aggressive towards people who need homes and if you rehome an aggressive dog, even after extensive behaviour training and into a low risk home, you are still risking a return of that aggression and harm to a human.
It's not worth it.

Jennifer Connell will spend a year in prison and four years on probation for neglecting her 26-day-old son, who died Jan. 25 when the family dog mauled the boy.

Tippecanoe Superior 2 Judge Steve Meyer sentenced Connell for one count of neglect that Connell pleaded guilty to in September.

Police who were called to Connell's home that morning found an aggressive dog covered with blood on its mouth and chest and standing near the lifeless body of Julian Connell. Officers had to shoot the dog to get to the infant, but they were too late. The child was dead.

Jennifer Connell's older son, Jameson, told police the dog was aggressive and his mother planned to get rid of the dog because it had bruised and scratched Julian a week before it killed the infant, according to prosecutors.

The morning of killing, Jameson removed the family's smaller dog after the large aggressive dog attacked it. But the larger dog managed to get into the bedroom where Julian was sleeping. Jameson returned to find the dog on the bed standing over his baby brother and covered in blood. He called police for help, according to prosecutors.

Police reports also noted that the house was in poor condition because of piles of dog feces in the home and two rabbits that were kept in cages in the basement, according to prosecutors.
