Sara Krueger was a doting mother to her 3-year-old daughter until her boyfriend moved into her Napa apartment a year ago and the couple began using methamphetamine, police and neighbors said.

Soon, Kayleigh Slusher, a happy pigtailed girl who liked to dress up like Barbie and Minnie Mouse, became a downcast figure who rarely ventured out. When she did, neighbors said, she looked like a zombie, with dark circles around her eyes.

Now, residents of the Royal Garden apartment complex on Wilkins Avenue are struggling to understand what allegedly led Krueger, 23, and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Ryan Scott Warner, to kill Kayleigh, whose body was found in her bed Saturday.
[...]

There had been no calls about Kayleigh to the Napa County agency in charge of protecting children from abuse, authorities said.

A resident and property manager of the complex, Elizabeth Chechourka, said Krueger was a good mother who never let Kayleigh out of her sight, even when the little girl would ride her pink and white Hello Kitty bike in the courtyard.

Krueger was outside every day, smoking or spending time with her daughter. She was going to school, studying to become a pre-school teacher.

That all changed when Warner moved in, Chechourka said. The couple closed the curtains, used drugs and rarely ventured outside, she said, and Kayleigh came out infrequently. On the rare occasions that she saw the family, Chechourka said she noticed that Krueger had lost a lot of weight and that Kayleigh looked sad.

The apartment management sent Krueger a letter several weeks ago due to complaints about noise, a stream of people coming in and out of the apartment, and the fact that Warner wasn't on the lease.

The letter warned the mother that she was "being watched by the Police Department and that if she didn't want to lose her housing and lose her apartment, she needed to get rid of the traffic within 24 hours," Chechourka said.

This is just so incredibly sad. By all appearances, she was, at one time, a good, loving mother. Until that wannabe gansta showed up. I think it's safe to assume that rapper-boy brought in the meth (good mom before - bad mom after), and she got hooked. As a recovering addict I know what a hold drugs can have on you. It's hard to kick. And I doubt that dick-wad was encouraging her to seek treatment. My heart just aches for that once happy little girl.

I agree. This is so much more sad to me than other types of cases. This poor little girl probably didn't understand WHY mommy was acting so weird and getting so mean and letting her boyfriend be mean to her. She was too young to call anyone and probably just felt awful. My heart aches for her too.

This was right near me. Though I read about these kinds of stories everyday on here, it's always a bit more shocking when it's close to home (coming from New Orleans I feel like I should be immune now... But for this to happen in wine country??) Rumor on the street has it that CPS actually had been called a number of times, and were actually days away from removing the poor girl. I'll be interested to see if this turns into another "CPS should've done more" story. RIP sweetie, wish I could have snatched you up and taken you away from these horrible subhuman shits.

Court documents indicate the body of Kayleigh Slusher was stored in a suitcase and then a freezer for three days, and that the little girl was "beaten to death" before that.

The mother of the 3-year-old Napa girl and her boyfriend stored Kayleigh's body in a suitcase, then a freezer, for three days, according to the documents. The girl's mother, Sara Kreuger, 23, and her boyfriend, Ryan Scott Warner, 26, were charged on Tuesday, after they had fled, and were taken into custody at the El Cerrito del Norte BART station.

Napa police on Monday confirmed that they were called to Krueger's residence 10 times last year for various crime reports, including domestic violence.

This year, Capt. Troendly said, officers were called out to the home on Jan. 27 and Jan. 29 because they heard reports that the mom was allegedly using drugs and that her daughter hadn't been fed.

“There was nothing to indicate that anybody was impaired in any way where that child would have been in danger when that officer left,” Capt. Troendly said Tuesday.

However, he said, police conducted a field sobriety test on the mom and boyfriend, and interviewed Kayleigh, clearing the scene without finding anything amiss.

Well, this we do know, is that Kayleighs mom made a horrifying life choice and is now going to Hell. She may be more worried about detoxing and not being able to get high right now, but her participation in the murder of her little girl, will hit her like a ton of bricks when she gets a moment of clarity. We might get lucky and she will willingly remove herself from humanity. Cause there is no coming back as a decent person after this. That's the wonders of meth.

Sara Krueger, 23, and Ryan Scott Warner, 26, both of Napa, were charged with murder and assault on a child resulting in death, Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein announced Tuesday. The couple put little Kayleigh Slusher's body in a suitcase and then in a freezer, Napa police Capt. Jeff Troendly said.

"Investigators learned through interviews with the suspects that the girl's body was kept in a suitcase at one point and then a freezer," Troendly said. "We believe that they are responsible for the death of Kayleigh Slusher."

Neither Krueger nor Warner entered a plea as a judge appointed them lawyers during their initial appearance in court Tuesday. The couple is accused of killing Kayleigh on Jan. 30, the day after Napa police officers did a welfare check on the girl, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Krueger and Warner are each being held in jail without bail. They are due back in court on Feb. 25.

Each could spend up to 25 years to life in prison, if convicted.

Is this an update? I didn't know about a freezer:
A Napa mother and her boyfriend, who are accused of beating the woman's 3-year-old daughter to death, admitted to police that they hid the child's body in a suitcase inside a freezer for three days, according to court documents released Tuesday.

Sara Krueger, 23, and Ryan Scott Warner, 26, were charged Tuesday with murder in connection with the death of Kayleigh Slusher. Clad in blue jail clothes at an afternoon court appearance, their hands shackled at their waists, they spoke only to confirm their names and to say they couldn't afford a private attorney.

Further proof that this woman is a ratings whore and cares nothing about the victims. As if I didn't already dislike her before I can't really stand her now. She has no shame.

Sara Lynn Krueger and her boyfriend Ryan Scott Warner pleaded not guilty this morning to killing Krueger's 3-year-old daughter Kayleigh Slusher, Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein said.

Lieberstein said an autopsy confirmed the girl died from "multiple blunt impact from injuries to the head, torso and extremities due to fatal child abuse and neglect."

Krueger, 23, and Warner, 26, each face 25 years to life in prison on two charges each -- murder with malice aforethought and assault on a child producing great bodily injuring causing death.

They will return to Napa County Superior Court on April 2 for setting of a preliminary hearing. Both are being held under no bail in the Napa County Detention Center.

I don't know if I would plead not guilty to the obvious. Sara and her accomplice, Ryan are going to be vilified and known by all for the immoral act of torture and murder on Saras 3 year old daughter. Jesus.

They're both pleading not guilty. Going to blame each other. Neither will be found guilty, because they can't prove which one actually killed her.

Or they will find them both guilty. Their fictional stories aside, if the evidence doesn't definitively prove one over the other sometimes juries can't get past the outrage of a dead child and just throw them both in jail. Despite the instructions given by the judge, juries are still human and in cases with child victims some juries say "fuck it" with evidence and put them all in prison. But that situation does raise a lot to appeal, beautifully though most criminals can't get bail while awaiting appeals and/or retrials.

Suitcase? Freezer? Christ on a bike. I have to believe he did that because I simply cannot fathom the image of a mother being able to handle the frozen, lifeless body of her 3 year old, no matter how high she was. Of course even if she really did have nothing to do with Kayleigh's death and the mishandling of her body, she still allowed the previous year's abuse and neglect to happen so she's still guilty as hell.

Very very few people plead guilty at this point in the process (arraignment). They haven't even had a preliminary hearing yet. Even if I was guilty as hell and intended to plead guilty, I would at least wait until after the preliminary hearing. Only an idiot would do otherwise.

I can't get over his name on his Facebook being "Whyteboy Ryan" seriously?? How do otherwise smart women seem to always get involved with worthless trash like this?? Even if I were madly in love with the dude, I'd be ashamed to have it say on my Facebook that I was "in a relationship with Whyteboy Ryan." And why do people still think lame shit like that is cool?? The fact that he would willing set "Whyteboy" as his Facebook display name tells me 100% of what I need to know about him.

"Freezer Tot" trial underway....

Emotions peaked during the Kayleigh Slusher murder trial Wednesday – which also happened to be Kayleigh’s birthday – as the police officer who found the child’s cold body recounted his experience at the apartment on 2060 Wilkins Avenue.

Deputy District Attorney Kecia Lind began to the show the court photos of the crime scene, beginning with the stairway leading up to Krueger’s apartment. Caution tape blocked the entrance to the stairs.

Chambers said he and two additional officers went inside after obtaining a key from a maintenance person.

There was a “smoky haze” in the apartment that hadn’t been there earlier in the week, like someone had been smoking inside with all of the windows closed, Chambers said. He announced their presence, he said, but there was no response.

Lind put up a photo of the apartment taken from the doorway, allowing the jury to see into Krueger’s former kitchen and living room. A photo of Kayleigh was on the wall.

Chambers said he went into the kitchen while the other officers checked out the bathroom and one of the bedrooms. Chambers then headed to the closed door.

[...]
Krueger began to cry.

“I could see a face,” Chambers said. “I thought it was a doll,” he said, getting emotional. “… I realized that it was the little girl I had talked to a couple of days ago.”

Krueger sobbed loudly while bailiffs handed out to tissues to jurors – at least four female jurors dabbed their eyes.

“I can’t…” Krueger told her attorney, Jim McEntee.

Judge Francisca P. Tisher issued a 15-minute break. Krueger was given the option to leave the courtroom, but decided to stay. Tisher noted for the record that “Ms. Krueger was sobbing loudly” and told her that she needed to try to maintain her composure.

After the break, Lind said she had only one more photo to show during Chambers’ testimony. A wave of silent horror seemed to come over the crowd as the final photo was shown.

An up-close photo of the bed in the little girl’s room appeared on the screen – Kayleigh’s pale, lifeless body was tucked under three blankets. The one closest to her – the pink one – cradled her tilted head, blonde hair peeking out from under it. The area around her eyes looked dark, her lips looked dark, her face was bruised. Disney princesses smiled above her on the bed’s headboard.

“She had blood coming from her nostril,” Chambers said, continuing to describe the scene. Her eyes were pale and there were bruises underneath her eyes, he said. It looked like the girl had been dead for some time, but still he checked her pulse and found none.

“Her skin was just ice cold,” he said.

Warner began to cry.

“I was completely confused,” Chambers said. In all his years as an officer, he said he had never felt a body that cold, that he didn’t think it was even possible for a body to be colder than the room it was in.

The officers, realizing they were in a crime scene, backed out of the apartment, he said, still sniffling.

Chambers went back inside, though, to escort Capt. Ty Becerra of Napa City Fire into the apartment. Becerra pulled down the blanket that had been up to Kayleigh’s neck, revealing her unclothed body, Chambers said. She had bruises on her chest, her stomach, her arms, he said.

Becerra confirmed that Kayleigh was dead and they pulled her blankets back up.
[...]
The person who called police to the scene, Warner’s childhood friend Antonio Valdez, also took the stand on Wednesday.

Valdez said it was about 12:30 or 1 a.m. on Feb. 1 when he showed up to Krueger’s apartment at Warner’s request. He said he thought that maybe Warner was having a problem with a neighbor.

When he learned that Warner had called him there because there was a little girl dead inside the apartment, Valdez said he became angry.

He told them that they needed to call the police before he did, he said. In the morning, after a restless night, Valdez made a call to his local law enforcement agency, the Richmond Police.

Testimony earlier in the day on Wednesday painted a bleak picture of increasing drug use among the adults in Kayleigh’s life while she was left to entertain herself in front of a TV.

Both Krueger and Warner were using methamphetamine almost daily in the months leading up to the girl’s death in January 2014, witnesses said.

Krueger’s friend, Allen Elpperson, who is in prison serving time for robbery, said Krueger had been “probably one of the best moms I’ve seen for people our age.”

Krueger stopped smoking methamphetamine when she became pregnant with Kayleigh, he said.

Epperson said that when he met Warner in January 2014 – just weeks before Kayleigh was found dead in the apartment – he didn’t get a good feeling from him.

There was “something weird about him,” he said. “I just didn’t get a good vibe off the dude.”

When he began visiting Krueger and Warner, he noticed signs of drug use. “They both looked strung out like they’d been using,” he said. Krueger had lost weight, become “real skinny” and seemed “moody” and “on edge.”

Kayleigh would watch cartoons in the living room while he, Krueger and Warner got high in Krueger’s bedroom with the door closed, he said.

Justin Kent, also in custody and serving time in prison, told the court that he also used drugs with Krueger and Warner at the apartment at 2060 Wilkins Ave.

The three of them would smoke methamphetamine in Krueger’s bedroom, but they never used drugs in front of Kayleigh, he said.

[...]
When Warner moved in, he began to take over some of Kayleigh’s parenting – taking her to the bathroom, cooking her meals and disciplining her, she testified. Patterson and Krueger also started to use methamphetamine again after Warner moved in, she said.

“It started off just on the weekends and turned into an almost daily thing,” she said. “She (Krueger) still loved her (Kayleigh), she just kind of stepped back as a mom and let Ryan (Warner) do fatherly things.”

Patterson said that bruises started appearing on Kayleigh, that Kayleigh would cry more often and was getting sick a lot.

Patterson said she also got a “bad vibe” from Warner and that she thought he was controlling. She never knew of any physical abuse, she said.

The murder trial began with opening statements on Monday and is expected to last all month. Each defendant is being tried separately, but simultaneously, in the same courtroom before Napa County Superior Court Judge Francisca P. Tisher. Separate juries will render verdicts.
