A man shot dead five people, including a 3-year-old girl, in violence that police in the southern English city of Plymouth believe began with a domestic dispute and the killing of his mother.

Mass shootings are rare in the United Kingdom, where gun ownership is relatively low, and Thursday's six-minute rampage was the worst such incident in more than decade.

Police on Friday named the shooter as Jake Davison, a 22-year-old crane operator. He turned his gun on himself after killing the five victims on Thursday evening, the police said.

Devon and Cornwall Police Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer said police had found no motive but they were not considering terrorism or any far-right associations, although they were trawling through Davison's computer.

"We believe we have an incident that is domestically related, that has spilled into the street and seen several people within Plymouth losing their lives in an extraordinarily tragic circumstance," Sawyer told reporters.

The shooting started at about 6 p.m. on Thursday, with the offender first killing his 51-year-old mother Maxine Davison.

He then ran outside and immediately shot dead the young girl, named by police as Sophie Martyn, in the street along with her father Lee Martyn, 43.

Davison shot at two other passers-by who were badly injured, then entered a park and shot dead another man, Stephen Washington, 59. He also shot Kate Shepherd, 66, who died later in hospital.

Davison then turned the gun on himself before firearms officers could tackle him. The deadly shooting spree was over in just a few minutes.

Sawyer said witnesses described the weapon as a pump-action shotgun. He could not say whether or not Davison had mental health issues. Davison had a firearms licence.

In videos posted on the internet, Davison had complained of not losing his virginity as a teenager and described himself as an "incel" - or involuntary celibate. He complained in the videos of being beaten down by life, the Times reported.

When I felt bad about the way I looked, I decided to go on a regular exercise program and a healthy diet. I have lost 40 lbs and have kept it off. There's no magic solution, just commit to a lifestyle change. He was young and could have focused his energy into improving the quality of his life. If I could start a diet and exercise routine at age 40 and improve my body and healthy significantly, he could have done even better at age 22! I am struggling to lose the last 15-20 lbs but I am still trying.
It is just horrible that he decided to take his problems out on people, including a baby who didn't do anything to him.

Being clean and groomed will take you a long way. When he killed all those people he became very unattractive!
Don’t know, might have been his best move

Many high-profile criminals, particularly those who have committed atrocious crimes, receive "fan mail" in prison that is sometimes amorous or sexual, presumably as a result of this phenomenon. In some cases, admirers of these criminals have gone on to marry the object of their affections in prison.

Other incels are actually going to exalt this man, even though he is disgusting in so many ways. If he felt he was too "fat and ugly" for women and sex, then there are things he could have done about that, other than killing innocent people. He could have groomed himself better - his beard was fine, but his hairstyle had too much going on - he could let himself look 22, as opposed to pass for significantly older; he could have gone on a fitness program and be physically active, something that does not require a physical trainer with an 8-pack yelling at you for ten hours a day six days a week; and he could have not given up on both himself and others, particularly women, so easily. I get the struggle, because I would enjoy having a girlfriend and eventually a wife: a woman who loves and adores me, and whom I can care about more than I would for myself. And I also get, and have experienced, the concept of "working so hard for something better" but "still getting/being nowhere". But blaming "all women" or an assortment of external loci for not gratifying you or giving you what you want is not the answer to solving your dating/sexual/romantic maladies and dissatisfactions. And killing people makes things worse for everyone, to put it lightly.

And he killed his own mother. What even was that for?

It doesn't really matter what he looked like, honestly. There are plenty of incels and their offshoots who are attractive. It's their words and actions that make them so abhorrent to women, not their appearance.

It's like... GiRLs are this whole other species to them. And instead of viewing women as unique individuals with a broad array of appearances and talents, they're filtering out everyone who doesn't look like they belong in the cheerleading squad of an 80s teen movie. No matter who you are, what you look like, or what charm you possess, some woman out there wants to fuck you and maybe even love you too. But you've got to work for it and accept that you need to work within the realm of your own attractiveness level. I don't know why that's so hard to understand.

Honestly, on reflection, it's as if the only socialization or media they've ever been exposed to is 80s teen movies..... Where the guy always "earns" a girl in the end regardless of all the off-putting things he's done, but only attractive people get love.

All I'm trying to say is, I'm not over here tryna get with Sam Heughan. I know Michael Cera is about as good as I'm going to get. :p

I'm certain they are already celebrating his "victory" on the incels websites and paying close attention to their ranks to figure out which member of the clan went "ER". (Elliott Rodgers is their hero.) They are such a sad, twisted, hateful product of modern society. Most of them will never be self aware enough to understand their horrid ugliness has nothing to do with their physical appearance.

Yes Yes Yes! Very necessary and great point, and physical appearance is something I perhaps overemphasized in my original post, because being handsome/beautiful/physically attractive is not the answer to all life's problems. People can look any way they want, but the attitudes, narcissism, entitlement, and rampant misogyny are what is so dangerous and characteristic about incels.

And yes, I have read about how films with male protagonists have said male frequently "win" the woman at the end (or beforehand), which influences the attitudes of the young men who watch the films, thinking that they are owed or expecting to experience such a narrative in their life, and eventually landing the woman they want, regardless of if the woman reciprocates or not. (One particularly stupid example is the film Gus starring Don Knotts.) Many "hero's journey" films/stories have that as an element. There is no way that, with so many films having this as a relevant element, that that can't affect male attitudes toward women.

A lot of good points made before I got on... Let me go on a tangent here.
The shooter apparently had a legal permit to the shotgun he used, which is hard to obtain and/or keep if there are any mental health/criminal issues with the permit holder. All sorts of politicians are calling for an investigation to find out why this man was legally allowed to have guns (BoJo himself has called for an investigation). Sometimes they stay just under the radar until something like this happens...
Gun ownership laws were radically changed in the UK after a man walked into a school in Dunblane, Scotland and killed a whole bunch of kids (in 1996, I think).
Years ago, I was a waiter at a fancy restaurant in NYC, and I was waiting on a nice couple from Dunblane. We got talking about where they're from, and they said proudly that Andy Murray (the tennis player for you non-sports people) is from there. But I could tell there was something they were not telling me. I got home and googled it... Imagine being from a town that's famous for a horrible massacre. At least they have Andy Murray to deflect the negative infamy a little bit.

All women know at least one guy who is so creepy that you actively avoid him. No matter the place or time they always look at you as if you are naked, wanting to touch you inappropriately, standing too close, talking to you as if you are his girlfriend, just slimy and off putting. Now they call em incels, used to just call em creepy.

He had a whole dang YouTube channel. He wasn't exactly under the radar.

Honestly, based on the mass shooter statistics out there, they should probably do a few extra screenings on any white man over 18 who lives with his mother.

Either way... The UK is clearly doing a better job at keeping guns out of the hands of crazy people than we are.

I know of many guys who are Harry Henderson faced, with Santa Claus physical charms. These guys still get some beautiful girls. I believe the true problem is their personalities and lack of charismatic charm. Let's be honest, being nice and respectful can really make a person more attractive.

Hey now today we call them fluffy and unique those PC standards need to be addressed.
Fuck that!! Fat and ugly is what it is.
Although....If you clean up that attitude and ego? The ugly ceases to exist.

In 5 years the perp description on crime sheets is going to be so vague we'll all be suspects.
